Southern Circuit

Best Time for a Tanzania Flying Safari
A flying safari can be operated year-round, but certain periods offer the finest experiences in specific parks:
June – October (Dry Season) — Peak Flying Safari Season The best overall period for a full Tanzania flying safari. Vegetation is at its lowest, wildlife concentrates around rivers and waterholes, and road conditions (relevant for transfers within parks) are at their best. The Mara River crossings in the northern Serengeti peak between July and September. Ruaha and Selous are outstanding during this period, with the Great Ruaha River and Rufiji River serving as wildlife magnets that concentrate extraordinary numbers of animals.
January – February (Green Season) An excellent period for the Serengeti calving season (January–February), with dense predator activity and newborn wildebeest on the southern Serengeti plains. Ruaha remains accessible. Selous boat safaris are particularly rewarding in the green season as birdlife peaks. Zanzibar’s northeast coast is in excellent condition. Lodge rates are typically lower across most parks during this period.
July – September with Migration Focus For flying safaris specifically designed around the Great Wildebeest Migration, July–September in the northern Serengeti is the prime window. Note: The long rains (April–May) affect road conditions across Tanzania but have less impact on flying safaris — the parks are still accessible by air, lodges are quieter, and rates are lowest. Some lodges in the Selous close during this period due to flooding.

The Aircraft Most scheduled safari flights in Tanzania operate on Cessna Caravan 208B aircraft — 9–12 passenger single-engine turboprops. Most have no terminal building: you walk across the grass to the waiting vehicle. Luggage is loaded and unloaded by hand. Weight limits apply — typically 15 kg of checked luggage per person in a soft-sided bag, plus a small day pack. The Views Flying at 500–2,000 feet above the bush between parks gives you perspectives unavailable on the ground.
