Tanzania Flying Safari — See More, Travel Further, Waste Nothing

Tanzania is a vast country. The distance from Arusha in the north to the Selous in the south is over 600 kilometres — a full day’s drive on rough roads, or 90 minutes in a light aircraft skimming above the bush. A Tanzania flying safari solves the single greatest logistical challenge of East African travel: how to experience multiple extraordinary parks, spread across a country larger than France, without spending precious safari days on a road.

At Nyange Adventures, we design flying safaris that connect Tanzania’s finest wildlife destinations — north to south, east to coast — by scheduled and chartered light aircraft. You land directly on bush airstrips inside or adjacent to national parks, step off the plane, and your guide and safari vehicle are waiting. No long transfers. No lost hours. Just Tanzania, from dawn game drive to dusk, every day.

What Is a Tanzania Flying Safari?

A flying safari uses Tanzania’s extensive network of bush airstrips and scheduled light aircraft services to move you between parks efficiently and in comfort. Instead of spending 6–8 hours on a road between, say, the Serengeti and Ruaha, you board a 9–12 seat propeller aircraft at a Serengeti airstrip and land at Msembe Airstrip in Ruaha just over an hour later.

The flights themselves are part of the experience. Flying at low altitude over the Serengeti plains, the Rift Valley escarpment, or the Selous wetlands gives you perspectives on Tanzania’s landscapes — and its wildlife — that no road journey can match.

Flying safari vs driving safari — key differences:

  • Time efficiency: A flying safari allows you to cover Tanzania’s Northern and Southern Circuits in 8–10 days. The equivalent road-based journey would take 14+ days.
  • Access: Several of Tanzania’s finest parks — particularly Ruaha and Selous/Nyerere — are significantly easier and more rewarding to access by air. Road transfers to these parks are long and tiring.
  • Comfort: No hours of bumping over corrugated dirt roads between parks. You arrive at each destination fresh, rested, and ready for an afternoon game drive.
  • Coverage: A flying safari makes it genuinely practical to combine Tanzania’s best Northern Circuit parks with the extraordinary but remote Southern Circuit — something very few road-based itineraries can achieve comfortably.
  • The flight itself: Low-altitude bush flying over Tanzania’s wilderness is genuinely thrilling. Dawn departures from Seronera with zebra crossing the runway are not unusual.

Tanzania's Flying Safari Destinations

A full Tanzania flying safari with Nyange Adventures can connect any combination of the following:

Northern Circuit

Serengeti National Park Tanzania’s most celebrated park has multiple airstrips serving different zones of the ecosystem — Seronera (central), Grumeti (western), Kogatende and Lamai (northern), and Ndutu (southern). Which airstrip you fly into depends on the time of year and the migration’s position. Our specialists ensure you land in the right zone for the best wildlife experience at the time of your travel.

Fly-in access to the Serengeti opens up lodges deep inside the park that are impractical to reach by road — exclusive camps that sit in the heart of predator territory, far from any tarmac, accessible only by air.

Ngorongoro Conservation Area The Ngorongoro airstrip sits on the crater rim, offering one of aviation’s most dramatic arrivals — you descend through cloud and suddenly the entire 260 km² caldera opens below you. Lodge transfers from the airstrip take just minutes. Flying into Ngorongoro eliminates the long road climb from Arusha or the Serengeti gate.

Tarangire National Park Tarangire’s airstrip provides direct access to the park’s interior. Flying in avoids the 3-hour road transfer from Arusha and allows you to be on a game drive within 20 minutes of landing — ideal for maximising time in one of Tanzania’s finest elephant parks.

Lake Manyara National Park Manyara’s airstrip is close to the park entrance and makes it an efficient half-day stop — perfect for an afternoon flamingo and tree-climbing lion drive between a morning arrival flight and an onward connection the following day.

Arusha The hub of Tanzania’s Northern Circuit. Arusha Airport (ARK) or Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) serves as the main gateway for most flying safari itineraries. All scheduled light aircraft flights from Coastal Aviation and Air Excel operate out of Arusha.

Southern Circuit

Ruaha National Park Tanzania’s largest national park and arguably its most rewarding for experienced safari-goers. Ruaha is remote — 130 km from the nearest town of Iringa — and this remoteness is precisely what makes it special. The park supports extraordinary populations of lion (including large prides rarely seen elsewhere), elephant, leopard, cheetah, wild dog, greater and lesser kudu, and roan antelope.

Flying into Ruaha from Arusha or the Serengeti typically takes 1.5–2 hours. Msembe Airstrip is located inside the park, meaning your game drive begins the moment your wheels touch down. Ruaha has a small number of excellent lodges ranging from comfortable mid-range tented camps to genuinely outstanding luxury properties perched above the Great Ruaha River.

Selous / Nyerere National Park Africa’s largest game reserve and one of Tanzania’s greatest natural treasures. The Selous — now officially gazetted as Nyerere National Park in its northern section — offers safari experiences unavailable elsewhere in Tanzania: boat safaris along the Rufiji River, walking safaris through the bush with armed rangers, and fly-camping under the stars on seasonal islands in the river’s floodplain.

Flying into Selous from Dar es Salaam takes approximately 45 minutes; from Ruaha, about 1 hour. Beho Beho, Sand Rivers, and Jongomero are among the finest camps in Africa — accessible only by air or long dirt road. The Selous is the best destination in Tanzania for wild dog sightings, supports Africa’s largest hippo population, and offers crocodile viewing of a scale found nowhere else.

Mikumi National Park Tanzania’s fourth largest national park and the closest to Dar es Salaam. Mikumi is an excellent addition to a Southern Circuit flying safari — particularly for travellers combining a Tanzania safari with a Dar es Salaam city stop or a Zanzibar beach extension originating from the south coast.

Zanzibar — The Flying Safari's Perfect Finale

No full Tanzania flying safari is complete without Zanzibar. The island lies just 35 kilometres off the coast and is a 30–45 minute flight from Dar es Salaam — seamlessly connected to either the Northern or Southern Circuit via a short domestic hop.

After 7–10 days of dawn game drives, bush breakfasts, and the intensity of Tanzania’s finest wildlife, landing on Zanzibar and walking directly onto a white sand beach is one of travel’s great transitions. The island’s northeast and east coast beaches — Matemwe, Nungwi, Paje, and Michamvi — offer some of the Indian Ocean’s finest snorkelling, diving, and reef-protected swimming.

Your Nyange Adventures specialist will match you to the right beach property for your budget and interests — from boutique coral-stone guesthouses to full-service luxury resorts with private pools and butler service.

Flying Safari Accommodation — Luxury & Mid-Range Options

A Tanzania flying safari does not require a luxury budget to be exceptional. Our itineraries are designed across two accommodation tiers — and both deliver a genuinely rewarding safari experience.

Luxury Tier — From approximately $700–$1,200+ per person per night (full board)

The finest fly-in lodges and camps in Tanzania are among the best in Africa. These properties typically have:

  • 6–20 guest tents or chalets — small, private, and intimate
  • Direct access to game viewing from the camp perimeter
  • Professional, highly experienced guide teams
  • Exceptional cuisine — often sourced from on-site gardens or local suppliers
  • Signature experiences: private sundowners, bush dinners, guided walking safaris, boat safaris
  • Locations deep inside or immediately adjacent to park boundaries — inaccessible by road

Mid-Range Tier — From approximately $300–$600 per person per night (full board)

Tanzania’s mid-range fly-in lodges offer outstanding value and a genuinely good safari experience. These properties typically feature:

  • Comfortable en-suite tented accommodation
  • Shared game drive vehicles with knowledgeable guides (private vehicle upgrades usually available)
  • Good quality meals with a social atmosphere
  • Reliable wildlife access across all key parks
  • Professionally managed operations with strong conservation ethics

Nyange Adventures will always be transparent about what each accommodation tier delivers. We do not dress up mid-range lodges as luxury — we match you to the right tier for your budget and priorities and make every property earn its place in your itinerary.

Who Is a Tanzania Flying Safari Best For?

A Tanzania flying safari is particularly well-suited to:

  • Travellers with limited time — 7–10 days is sufficient to cover Northern and Southern circuits by air. The same journey by road takes 14+ days.
  • Repeat Tanzania visitors who have done the Northern Circuit and want to add Ruaha, Selous, or a Southern Circuit for the first time.
  • Couples and honeymooners wanting a premium, seamless experience without long road transfers between romantic destinations.
  • Older or less mobile travellers for whom long driving days on corrugated bush roads are uncomfortable or impractical.
  • Wildlife photographers who need maximum time in-park and in-vehicle, not on the road between parks.
  • Anyone combining Tanzania with Zanzibar — flying is the only sensible way to reach the island as part of a multi-park itinerary.

Best Time for a Tanzania Flying Safari

A flying safari can be operated year-round, but certain periods offer the finest experiences in specific parks:

June – October (Dry Season) — Peak Flying Safari Season The best overall period for a full Tanzania flying safari. Vegetation is at its lowest, wildlife concentrates around rivers and waterholes, and road conditions (relevant for transfers within parks) are at their best. The Mara River crossings in the northern Serengeti peak between July and September. Ruaha and Selous are outstanding during this period, with the Great Ruaha River and Rufiji River serving as wildlife magnets that concentrate extraordinary numbers of animals.

January – February (Green Season) An excellent period for the Serengeti calving season (January–February), with dense predator activity and newborn wildebeest on the southern Serengeti plains. Ruaha remains accessible. Selous boat safaris are particularly rewarding in the green season as birdlife peaks. Zanzibar’s northeast coast is in excellent condition. Lodge rates are typically lower across most parks during this period.

July – September with Migration Focus For flying safaris specifically designed around the Great Wildebeest Migration, July–September in the northern Serengeti is the prime window. Our specialists will design your flight routing to maximise time in the northern Serengeti and Kogatende area while adding Ruaha or Selous for a Southern Circuit contrast.

November – December Short rains arrive on the mainland but are typically brief and do not significantly disrupt flying safaris. December is an excellent time on Zanzibar — calm seas, good beach weather, and a festive atmosphere. A popular choice for travellers with December weddings or end-of-year travel plans.

Note: The long rains (April–May) affect road conditions across Tanzania but have less impact on flying safaris — the parks are still accessible by air, lodges are quieter, and rates are lowest. Some lodges in the Selous close during this period due to flooding.

The Light Aircraft Experience — What to Expect

The Aircraft Most scheduled safari flights in Tanzania operate on Cessna Caravan 208B aircraft — 9–12 passenger single-engine turboprops. These are the workhorses of East African bush aviation: safe, reliable, and operated by experienced pilots who know Tanzania’s airstrips and weather patterns intimately. Charter flights may use twin-engine aircraft. All operators used by Nyange Adventures hold current CAA Tanzania certification.

The Airstrips Tanzania’s bush airstrips are exactly what the name suggests — cleared grass or dirt strips inside or adjacent to national parks. Most have no terminal building: you walk across the grass to the waiting vehicle. Luggage is loaded and unloaded by hand. Weight limits apply — typically 15 kg of checked luggage per person in a soft-sided bag, plus a small day pack. We provide a detailed packing and luggage guidance document with every flying safari booking.

The Views Flying at 500–2,000 feet above the bush between parks gives you perspectives unavailable on the ground. The Rift Valley escarpment, the Selous flood channels, the Serengeti’s endless plains, and the turquoise arc of the Indian Ocean approaching Zanzibar are all genuinely spectacular from the air. Carry your camera in your day pack — not in the hold.

Multi-Stop Flights Scheduled flights between parks often make intermediate stops at other airstrips to drop off and pick up other passengers. This is normal and expected — a Serengeti-to-Selous flight via Arusha might take 2.5–3 hours with stops. Your specialist will outline exact routing for your itinerary in advance.

Flying Safari Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about planning a Tanzania flying safari with Nyange Adventures.

Yes — the cost of internal flights (typically $150–$400 per person per sector depending on distance and whether scheduled or chartered) adds meaningfully to the total package cost. However, the time savings are significant: flying replaces 6–8 hour road days with 1–2 hour flights. For travellers with limited time or a specific park combination in mind, a flying safari often represents the best value for the experience delivered.

Most scheduled light aircraft flights in Tanzania operate a 15 kg soft bag limit per person, plus a small personal daypack. Hard-sided suitcases are not permitted — duffel bags and soft holdalls are required. We provide a detailed packing list and luggage guide with every flying safari booking, along with a recommended safari duffel bag specification.

Not at all — you are a passenger throughout. Tanzania's bush pilots are highly experienced, and the light aircraft are operated under strict safety regulations. Occasional air pockets and bumpy approaches to remote airstrips are part of the experience, not a safety concern.

Yes — and this combination is one of our most popular flying safari enhancements. A pre-dawn balloon flight over the Serengeti during your stay, concluding with a champagne bush breakfast, is the ultimate aerial double: the balloon at sunrise, the light aircraft later in the week for your park transfer. Both are included in relevant itineraries.

Yes — this is an excellent combination. Complete your Kilimanjaro summit via your chosen route (7–9 days), rest in Moshi for a day, and then fly from Kilimanjaro International Airport into the Serengeti or Tarangire to begin your flying safari. One of Tanzania's great combined adventures.

Yes — children are welcome on flying safaris and on Tanzania's scheduled light aircraft. There is no minimum age for the flights themselves, though individual lodges may have minimum age policies (typically 5–8 years for shared game drives; private vehicle options remove most age restrictions). Soft-bag luggage limits apply to all passengers including children.

Most flying safari itineraries begin at Arusha (for Northern or Northern + Southern Circuit programmes) or Dar es Salaam (for Southern Circuit or Zanzibar-first itineraries). Nyange Adventures arranges all international arrival transfers — from Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) for Arusha, or Julius Nyerere International Airport (DAR) for Dar es Salaam — as part of your package.

Scheduled flights (operated by Coastal Aviation, Air Excel, and Auric Air) follow fixed routes with set departure times and shared passenger manifests. Charter flights put an aircraft exclusively at your disposal — departing when you choose, routing as you prefer, with no other passengers. Charters cost significantly more but offer maximum flexibility and privacy. Nyange Adventures operates both and will recommend the right option based on your itinerary and group size.
