Tour Overview

Join our 6-Day Kilimanjaro Machame Trek, one of the most scenic and popular routes to the summit of Africa’s highest peak. The Machame Route is also known as the “Whiskey Route” because it is more challenging than the Marangu Route but offers better acclimatization and higher summit success rates.

The trek includes:

• Experienced mountain guides and porters for support throughout the climb
• Comfortable camping accommodation along the route
• Pre-climb briefing and equipment checks
• Freshly prepared meals during the trek
• Opportunities to see unique plants, wildlife, and spectacular landscapes

6-Day Machame Route Itinerary

Day 1 : Moshi Arrival - Kibo View Farm Lodge

When you arrive at Kilimanjaro Airport (JRO), our driver will meet you outside the Customs area holding a Nyange Adventure sign with your name. You will then be transferred to your hotel, Kibo View Farm Lodge, in Moshi to prepare for your 5-day Kilimanjaro Marangu trek.

At the lodge, your guide will give a short briefing, answer your questions, and check your equipment. If you need any extra gear, you can rent it locally at a fair price before the climb.

Day 2: Kibo View Farm Lodge → Machame Gate → Machame Camp

Distance: 5 km (3 miles)
Time: 4–6 hours
Elevation: 3,000 m → 3,840 m (9,840 ft → 12,600 ft)
Accommodation: Shira Camp

After breakfast, you leave the rainforest behind and enter the heath and moorland zone. The trail becomes steeper with rocky paths and wide views of Mount Meru in the distance. You will enjoy amazing scenery as you climb steadily onto the Shira Plateau. After 4–6 hours, you reach Shira Camp, where you will rest and enjoy sunset views above the clouds.

Day 3: Shira Camp → Lava Tower → Barranco Camp

Distance: 10 km (6 miles)
Time: 6–8 hours
Elevation: 3,840 m → 4,600 m → 3,960 m (12,600 ft → 15,090 ft → 12,990 ft)
Accommodation: Barranco Camp

Today is an important acclimatization day. You climb slowly toward Lava Tower at 4,600 m, where you take lunch and allow your body to adjust to altitude. Afterward, you descend to Barranco Camp through a dramatic landscape of valleys and giant senecio plants. This “climb high, sleep low” day helps your body prepare for summit night.

Day 4: Barranco Camp → Karanga Camp

Distance: 5 km (3 miles)
Time: 4–5 hours
Elevation: 3,960 m → 4,035 m (12,990 ft → 13,240 ft)
Accommodation: Karanga Camp

After breakfast, you face the famous Barranco Wall, a steep but non-technical climb that offers exciting views at the top. The trail continues with ups and downs across ridges and valleys before reaching Karanga Camp. This is a short day, giving you time to rest and recover for summit preparation.

Day 5: Karanga Camp → Barafu Camp

Distance: 4 km (2.5 miles)
Time: 3–4 hours
Elevation: 4,035 m → 4,640 m (13,240 ft → 15,220 ft)
Accommodation: Barafu Camp

Today you climb to Barafu Camp, your base camp for the summit attempt. The landscape becomes cold, rocky, and barren as you approach high altitude. After arriving, you rest early, prepare your gear, and get ready for the midnight summit push. Your guide will give a full briefing for summit night.

Day 6: Barafu Camp → Uhuru Peak → Mweka Camp

Distance: 17 km (10.5 miles)
Time: 12–15 hours
Elevation: 4,640 m → 5,895 m → 3,100 m (15,220 ft → 19,341 ft → 10,170 ft)
Accommodation: Mweka Camp

You begin your summit push at midnight and climb slowly to Uhuru Peak. After reaching the summit, you descend back to Barafu Camp and continue down to Mweka Camp for your final night on the mountain.

Day 7: Mweka Camp → Mweka Gate → Kibo View Farm Lodge

Distance: 10 km (6 miles)
Time: 3–4 hours
Elevation: 3,100 m → 1,640 m (10,170 ft → 5,380 ft)
Accommodation: Kibo View Farm Lodge

After breakfast, you descend through the rainforest to Mweka Gate where you receive your summit certificate. Your driver will transfer you back to Kibo View Farm Lodge for a warm shower, relaxation, and celebration dinner.

Day 8: Departure Day

Enjoy a relaxed morning at Kibo View Farm Lodge with breakfast before your transfer to the airport or your next destination. This marks the end of your unforgettable Kilimanjaro adventure.
