Tanzania Safari & Zanzibar Beach Combinations

Few travel combinations deliver as much contrast and satisfaction as a Tanzania wildlife safari followed by a Zanzibar beach retreat. In the space of a single trip, you can witness lions hunting on the Serengeti plains at dawn and be watching the sun set over the turquoise Indian Ocean by evening, cocktail in hand, from the deck of a luxury beach resort.

This is one of Africa’s great classic journeys — and Nyange Adventures has perfected the art of making it feel completely seamless.

Why Combine a Safari with Zanzibar?

The safari-and-beach combination has become one of the world’s most sought-after holiday formats for a very good reason: it works brilliantly. The intensity and excitement of daily game drives — early morning starts, hours in the bush, the concentrated focus of watching predators and prey — reaches a natural conclusion point after 5–8 days. That is the moment Zanzibar becomes the perfect chapter two.

From the bush to the beach in 90 minutes. Regular scheduled flights connect Arusha and the Serengeti airstrips directly to Zanzibar’s Abeid Amani Karume International Airport. Your transition from the world’s greatest wildlife destination to one of the Indian Ocean’s most beautiful islands is as smooth as any journey on earth.

Your Safari — Tanzania's Finest Wildlife Parks

A Nyange Adventures safari preceding your Zanzibar beach stay will typically take you through one or more of the following:

Serengeti National Park Africa’s most celebrated national park and the stage for the annual Great Wildebeest Migration. Resident Big Five populations, cheetah, wild dog, and extraordinary birdlife make the Serengeti a non-negotiable for first-time visitors to Tanzania.

Ngorongoro Conservation Area A UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Africa’s natural wonders. The Ngorongoro Crater is a 260 km² caldera sheltering an extraordinary density of wildlife — black rhino, lion prides, enormous elephant bulls, and flamingo-fringed soda lakes.

Tarangire National Park Tanzania’s best elephant park, with ancient baobab trees, resident leopard, and a remote, unhurried atmosphere. An ideal addition for travellers wanting to see beyond the Northern Circuit’s most visited destinations.

Lake Manyara National Park Famous for its tree-climbing lions and spectacular flamingo flocks, Manyara can be visited en route between parks as a morning or afternoon game drive — making it an efficient and rewarding addition to any itinerary.

Your Beach Extension — Zanzibar, the Spice Island

Zanzibar is an archipelago of islands lying 35 kilometres off the coast of mainland Tanzania. The main island, Unguja, is what most travellers refer to as Zanzibar — a place of extraordinary natural beauty, fascinating Swahili and Arab history, and some of the finest beaches in the world.

Zanzibar's best beach areas for post-safari relaxation:

Nungwi & Kendwa (North Coast) The most popular resort area, with calm, swimmable waters year-round, vibrant sunsets, and a wide range of luxury resorts and boutique hotels. Ideal for travellers who want lively atmosphere, watersports, and social beach dining.

Matemwe & Kiwengwa (Northeast Coast) A quieter, more exclusive stretch of coastline backed by coral gardens. Home to several of Zanzibar’s finest luxury resorts and ideal for snorkelling and diving. The reef offshore at Matemwe is among the island’s most biodiverse.

Paje & Jambiani (Southeast Coast) The kite-surfing hub of Zanzibar, with a long shallow lagoon exposed at low tide and a laid-back, bohemian atmosphere. Popular with active travellers who want watersports alongside their beach retreat.

Michamvi & Bwejuu (East Coast) Remote, unspoiled, and exceptionally beautiful. The east coast offers some of Zanzibar’s most dramatic scenery — long white sand beaches, swaying palms, and a peaceful atmosphere suited to couples and honeymooners.

Stone Town Zanzibar’s UNESCO-listed old town, is a labyrinth of narrow lanes, carved wooden doors, Arab-influenced architecture, spice markets, and rooftop restaurants serving fresh seafood. A half-day cultural exploration of Stone Town is a rewarding addition to any Zanzibar stay.

Best Time to Visit — Safari & Zanzibar Combination

June – October Peak safari season combined with the best beach weather on Zanzibar’s north and east coasts. The southeast monsoon (Kusi) has ended, the Indian Ocean is calm, and visibility for snorkelling and diving is at its finest. July–September is ideal for witnessing the Wildebeest Migration river crossings. Highest demand period — book early.

January – March Excellent conditions across both components. The Serengeti calving season (January–February) is one of the most dramatic wildlife spectacles of the year. Zanzibar’s northeast coast is calm and beautiful during this period. Shoulder season pricing at many lodges and resorts.

November – December Short rains on the mainland are typically brief and should not significantly disrupt safari activities. Zanzibar can experience some rainfall in November, but December is generally excellent. A popular period for festive season and New Year travel.

Note: The long rains (April–May) are the one period we advise against for a Zanzibar beach holiday, as rainfall is sustained and can be heavy, particularly on the island’s west coast.

Safari & Zanzibar Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about combining a Tanzania safari with a Zanzibar beach extension.

Coastal Aviation and Air Excel operate scheduled light aircraft flights from Serengeti airstrips (Seronera, Kogatende, Grumeti, Ndutu) to Zanzibar, typically via Arusha. Flight times are approximately 90 minutes to 2.5 hours depending on routing. Nyange Adventures will book and coordinate all internal flights as part of your package.

Most guests find 3–5 nights in Zanzibar to be the ideal length for a post-safari beach extension. Three nights is enough to settle in, explore Stone Town, and enjoy the beach fully. Five nights allows for day trips, watersports, snorkelling excursions, and proper relaxation after the intensity of the bush.

Yes — Zanzibar is an excellent family destination. The shallow lagoon beaches along the east and south coasts are ideal for children, and many of the island's resort properties have good children's facilities, pools, and supervised activities. Snorkelling with sea turtles at Mnemba Atoll is a highlight for older children.

Zanzibar offers spice plantation tours, dhow sunset cruises, dolphin watching at Kizimkazi, snorkelling and diving at Mnemba Atoll and Nakupenda Sandbank, kitesurfing at Paje, guided tours of Stone Town, and sea kayaking. All activities can be arranged by your Nyange Adventures specialist.

A compact 7-day programme is possible — for example, 4 nights on safari covering the Serengeti and Ngorongoro, followed by 3 nights in Zanzibar. However, for a deeply satisfying experience of both components, 10–12 days is our recommended minimum. Rushed safaris mean less time in each park, and rushed beach stays rarely deliver the relaxation they promise.

Still planning your route? Our specialists can help you match the right safari parks with the right Zanzibar property — and find the perfect balance between bush and beach for your time and budget.
