What to Expect on a Serengeti Hot Air Balloon Safari
Before the Flight Your balloon safari begins well before sunrise, with an early morning transfer from your Serengeti lodge or camp to the launch site — typically around 5:30–6:00 AM. You’ll watch the balloon being inflated as the sky begins to lighten and the Serengeti awakens around you.
The Flight Once airborne, your pilot will navigate the balloon across the Serengeti plains at a range of altitudes — low enough to watch individual animals in remarkable detail, and high enough to appreciate the vast scale of this extraordinary ecosystem. Flight time is approximately 60–75 minutes. Conversation is quiet — the silence of balloon flight is one of its most powerful qualities. Wildlife sightings during the flight are excellent, particularly during the migration season when the plains are filled with enormous herds.
The Landing Landings occur on the open plains, wherever the wind and your pilot’s skill deliver you. Ground crew will be waiting, and the balloon is packed away as breakfast is prepared.
The Champagne Bush Breakfast Following the flight, a full English breakfast is served on the plains — tables, linen, and glassware set up beneath the acacia trees. A glass of champagne marks the occasion. It is one of the most memorable meals you will ever have. Your guide will collect you from the breakfast site and return you to your lodge in time for a late morning rest before the afternoon game drive.
When Is the Best Time for a Balloon Safari?
Hot air balloon safaris over the Serengeti operate year-round, with morning departures from Seronera (central Serengeti) available throughout the year. Additional launch sites in the northern and western Serengeti operate seasonally, following the migration.
July – October: Balloon flights over the northern Serengeti coincide with the Wildebeest Migration river crossings. If the herds are crossing the Mara River, the views from a balloon above can be genuinely extraordinary.
January – March: Balloon flights over the southern Serengeti and Ndutu area coincide with the calving season — enormous herds and abundant predator activity visible from above.
All seasons offer excellent balloon safari experiences — the wildlife of the Serengeti is present year-round.

Most balloon safari operators require a minimum age of 7 years for children and a minimum height of approximately 1.2 metres. Children under 7 are not permitted on balloon safaris. Dress in warm layers — early mornings on the Serengeti can be quite cool, particularly at altitude. Light clothing for the post-flight breakfast as temperatures warm quickly after sunrise. Closed-toe shoes are recommended. Avoid hats with large brims that could interfere with the balloon's burners.
