What Nungwi Beach is actually like.
At the very northern tip of Zanzibar, Nungwi sits outside the island's main tidal basin, which means the water here stays swimmable at almost any hour — a rare thing on this coastline. It's also the liveliest beach town on the island, with a working dhow-building yard, a long strip of beach bars, and more restaurants and nightlife than anywhere else on Zanzibar's coast.

Nungwi occupies the northernmost point of Zanzibar, where the coastline curves enough that the beach avoids the dramatic low-tide drop found along most of the east coast. That makes it one of the few places on the island where you can swim comfortably regardless of what the tide table says, which is part of why it's become the default first stop for many visitors.
Beyond the beach itself, Nungwi is a proper town: a working shipyard still builds and repairs wooden dhows on the sand, and the main strip is lined with restaurants, dive shops and bars that stay lively well after sunset. It faces west, so it's also one of the better spots on the island to watch the sun go down over the water.
