4-Day Uganda Safari – Queen Elizabeth NP & Bwindi Gorilla Trekking

Trip Overview

Experience the very best of Uganda’s incredible wildlife on this compact yet action-packed 4-day safari departing from Kigali, Rwanda. This carefully crafted itinerary combines two of Uganda’s most iconic and breathtaking national parks — the wildlife-rich Queen Elizabeth National Park and the ancient Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park — home to nearly half of the world’s remaining mountain gorillas.

Beginning in Kigali, Day 1 takes you across the border into Uganda and straight into Queen Elizabeth National Park — one of Africa’s most diverse ecosystems, renowned for its tree-climbing lions, massive elephant herds, hippos, buffalos, and exceptional birdlife. Days 2 and 3 are dedicated to the once-in-a-lifetime experience of mountain gorilla trekking through the dense and mystical forests of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park — a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most biodiverse places on Earth. Coming face to face with a wild gorilla family in their natural habitat is a profound and deeply moving experience that no safari can rival. Day 4 returns you to Kigali for your onward journey.

4-Day Uganda Safari – Queen Elizabeth NP & Bwindi Gorilla Trekking

Day 1 : Pick Up from Kigali and Drive to Queen Elizabeth National Park

Your Uganda safari adventure begins with an early morning pickup from your hotel in Kigali, Rwanda, as your dedicated driver-guide sets off on the scenic 6-hour drive to the renowned Queen Elizabeth National Park. The journey itself is a delight — winding through Rwanda’s breathtaking hills and landscapes, earning the country its well-deserved reputation as the Land of a Thousand Hills, before crossing into Uganda at the Katuna border post where a brief immigration stop marks your transition into East Africa’s most primate-rich country.

Following the border crossing, enjoy a comfortable lunch stop to refuel and stretch before continuing on through Uganda’s lush and scenic countryside toward your destination. Arrive at Queen Elizabeth National Park in the early evening — one of Uganda’s largest and most biodiverse protected areas, stretching across 1,978 square kilometers of savannah, wetlands, forests, and crater lakes along the Rwenzori Mountain foothills. Check in to your lodge, unwind, and soak in the sounds of the African wilderness as you settle in and prepare for the extraordinary chimpanzee trekking adventure that awaits the following day.

Main Destination: Queen Elizabeth National Park, Uganda

Accommodation: Enshama Game Lodge — a comfortable mid-range lodge situated just outside Queen Elizabeth National Park, offering easy access to the park’s remarkable wildlife and landscapes.

  • Meals included: Lunch & Dinner (Breakfast not included)

Day 2: Chimpanzee Tracking and Transfer to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

After an early breakfast, pack up and head to the chimpanzee trekking briefing point in Queen Elizabeth National Park for a comprehensive orientation session covering everything you need to know before entering the forest. Following the briefing, participants are divided into small, intimate groups and assigned an expert guide who will lead the trek through the forest and back.

The search for wild chimpanzees begins as your group ventures into the dense forest, tracking the habituated chimp community with the help of your experienced guide. Once located, you will spend a precious hour in the company of these remarkable primates — observing their complex social interactions, listening to their distinctive calls echoing through the forest canopy, and marveling at behavioral similarities that remind us just how closely related we are to our closest living relatives. It is an intimate, exhilarating, and deeply memorable wildlife encounter.

After the trek, enjoy a well-earned lunch before setting off on the drive to your next extraordinary destination — the ancient and mystical Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most biodiverse ecosystems on Earth. Arrive in time for dinner and a restful overnight stay, with the anticipation of mountain gorilla trekking building as you settle into the heart of gorilla country.

Day 3: Gorilla Tracking in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

The most anticipated day of your Uganda safari has arrived — mountain gorilla trekking in the legendary Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park. Wake for an early breakfast at 6:30 AM before transferring to the park headquarters by 7:00 AM to join fellow trekkers for a thorough pre-trek briefing led by experienced Uganda Wildlife Authority rangers. The briefing covers essential gorilla trekking guidelines — the dos and don’ts designed to protect both the gorillas and the visitors — ensuring a safe, respectful, and rewarding encounter for everyone involved.

Following the briefing, trekkers are organized into small groups of eight and each assigned a dedicated ranger guide who will lead the trek into the ancient forest and back. The duration of the trek varies depending on the daily location of the gorilla family — it may be a relatively short walk or a longer, more demanding hike through Bwindi’s dense and breathtaking terrain — but every step through this UNESCO World Heritage rainforest is an adventure in itself. Upon locating the habituated gorilla family, you will be granted a deeply moving one-hour encounter with these magnificent and critically endangered mountain gorillas in their natural habitat — observing silverbacks, mothers, and playful juveniles up close in an experience that will stay with you for the rest of your life.

Return to the lodge after the trek for a relaxed evening, dinner, and a peaceful overnight stay — with memories of the day’s extraordinary encounter to treasure forever.

Day 4: Transfer back to Kigali

After a final breakfast, bid farewell to the misty forests of Bwindi and begin the scenic drive back to Kigali, Rwanda, retracing your route through Uganda’s beautiful countryside and crossing back into Rwanda at the Katuna border post. The journey offers one last opportunity to soak in the stunning landscapes of the East African highlands — rolling green hills, terraced farmland, and the characteristic scenery that makes this region of Africa so visually captivating.

Enjoy a comfortable lunch stop en route before continuing on to Kigali, where your driver-guide will drop you off at your hotel or the airport for your onward journey home.
