7-Day Western Serengeti Wildebeests Migration May-July

Trip Overview

This 7-day safari focuses on the Western Serengeti during the Great Wildebeest Migration from May to July. It offers a unique opportunity to explore one of the world’s most famous wildlife destinations, Serengeti National Park, known for its vast landscapes and incredible concentration of animals.

During this period, millions of wildebeest, accompanied by large herds of zebras and other antelopes, move across the plains in search of fresh grazing. This journey follows a natural and seasonal pattern driven by rainfall.

The highlight of this safari is the Western Corridor, where the migrating herds face the challenge of crossing the Grumeti River. Here, dramatic scenes unfold as crocodiles lie in wait, making the crossing both thrilling and unpredictable.

This safari offers an unforgettable experience of the Great Migration in one of its most intense and fascinating stages.

Day-by-Day Itinerary: 7-Day Western Serengeti Wildebeests Migration May-July

Day 1 : Arrival in Arusha

Upon arrival at either Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) or Arusha Airport (ARK), our representative will be on hand to welcome you and transfer you to your accommodation in Arusha. You’ll spend the night at the Mtoni River Lodge, a stunning property nestled at the base of Mount Meru in the heart of Arusha city.

Accommodation: Mtoni River Lodge

Meal Plan: Bed & Breakfast

Day 2: Arusha to Tarangire National Park

After breakfast, you will depart for Tarangire National Park.

The park is named after the Tarangire River, the main water source for wildlife during the dry season. Often called the “river of warthogs,” it attracts a wide variety of animals, especially in the dry months.

The landscape features dense elephant grass, acacia woodlands, and open savannah. Tarangire is well known for its large elephant herds, often seen gathering along the river. You may also spot giraffes, bushbucks, and hartebeests, along with predators such as lions and leopards.

The park is also a haven for birdlife, with one of the highest numbers of breeding bird species in the world. It is one of the best places to see elephants in their natural habitat, from young calves to impressive bulls.

After lunch, you will drive to the Ngorongoro Highlands for dinner and an overnight stay at Eileen’s Trees Inn.

Travel Time: Approx. 2–3 hours
Main Destination: Tarangire National Park
Accommodation: Eileen’s Trees Inn
Meal Plan: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Day 3-4: Karatu to Western Serengeti (Grumeti) following the Great Migration

After an early breakfast, you will depart for the western part of Serengeti National Park, known as the Western Corridor.

From late April through June, this area becomes a key stage of the Great Migration. Large herds of wildebeest, along with zebras, elands, and gazelles, gather across the plains near the Grumeti River. As they move forward, they face constant pressure from predators such as lions, cheetahs, leopards, and hyenas, while crocodiles wait at the river crossings, creating dramatic and unforgettable wildlife moments.

Beyond the migration, the Western Serengeti offers breathtaking scenery—endless plains under wide open skies—making it a truly special safari experience.

After lunch and an extensive game drive, you will continue to your camp for dinner and an overnight stay at Mgunga Serengeti Camp.

You will spend two nights in the Western Corridor.

Travel Time: Approx. 5–7 hours (including game drive)
Main Destination: Serengeti National Park
Accommodation: Mgunga Serengeti Camp
Meal Plan: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Day 5: Western Serengeti to Ngorongoro Highlands

After an early breakfast, you will continue with a game drive through Serengeti National Park before heading towards the Ngorongoro region.

As you approach Ngorongoro Crater, the landscape opens into a breathtaking natural wonder. Surrounded by steep volcanic walls, the crater reveals a hidden world of sweeping savannah, patches of acacia woodland, and shimmering lakes and swamps.

The crater, formed millions of years ago when a massive volcano collapsed, is now one of Africa’s most important wildlife areas, known for its dense concentration of large mammals and dramatic scenery.

You will arrive at your accommodation in the late evening for dinner and an overnight stay at Embalakai Ngorongoro Camp, a luxury tented camp located less than one hour from the crater.

Travel Time: Approx. 4–6 hours (game drive + transfer)
Main Destination: Ngorongoro Highlands
Accommodation: Embalakai Ngorongoro Camp
Meal Plan: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Day 6: Ngorongoro Crater to Karatu

After an early breakfast, you will descend into Ngorongoro Crater, which is nearly 600 meters deep.

Formed around two to three million years ago after a massive volcanic eruption and collapse, the crater is now one of Africa’s most remarkable wildlife sanctuaries. It is known for its stunning scenery and exceptionally high concentration of wildlife.

The descent into the crater is an experience on its own. Once on the crater floor, you will find large populations of wildebeest, zebras, gazelles, and over 500 species of birds. It is also one of the best places in Africa to spot the endangered black rhino, which can sometimes be seen grazing in the open grasslands.

After a packed lunch and an extensive game drive, you will ascend the crater and continue to Karatu for dinner and an overnight stay at a carefully selected partner lodge – Eileen’s Trees Inn.

Travel Time: Approx. 5–7 hours (crater descent + game drive + transfer)
Main Destination: Ngorongoro Crater
Accommodation: Karatu partner lodge (Eileen’s Trees Inn)
Meal Plan: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Day 7: Lake Manyara National Park to Arusha

After an early breakfast, you will take a short drive to Lake Manyara National Park for a game-viewing experience.

One of the first sightings is often large troops of baboons, which are commonly found throughout the park. Located between the Lake Manyara basin and the Great Rift Valley escarpment, the park offers a beautiful variety of landscapes, including forests, open plains, and the lakeshore.

Lake Manyara National Park is well known for its rich biodiversity and was originally established to protect its famous elephant population. You may also encounter giraffes, zebras, buffaloes, and a wide range of birdlife. The park is also known for its rare tree-climbing lions, which are occasionally spotted resting in acacia trees.

A packed lunch will be served at a designated picnic site inside the park. In the late afternoon, you will drive back to Arusha, marking the end of your safari journey.

Travel Time: Approx. 1–2 hours (Arusha ↔ Lake Manyara)
Main Destination: Lake Manyara National Park
Accommodation: No accommodation (End of tour)
Meal Plan: Breakfast & Lunch
