What Paje Beach is actually like.
Paje catches the island's steadiest trade winds, which has made it Zanzibar's kite-surfing hub — schools and kite shops line the beach road. The tide pulls a long way out twice a day, so swimming windows depend on the tide table, but the wide, exposed sand at low tide is part of the appeal.

Paje sits on the island's east coast, where a shallow reef flat and reliable trade winds combine to make it the best-known kite-surfing spot in Zanzibar. Schools line the sand offering lessons and equipment rental, and kites dot the water for much of the day during the windier months.
Because the beach sits on that same reef flat, the tide has a big effect on how the beach looks and feels — at low tide the water retreats a long way, leaving wide, walkable sand and shallow pools, while at high tide it fills back in closer to the beach road. The town itself leans young and backpacker-friendly, with a relaxed strip of guesthouses, cafes and bars.
