excursion overview

Zanzibar's last patch of native forest.

Jozani-Chwaka Bay National Park is Zanzibar's only national park and the last significant stand of native forest on the island, home to the endangered Zanzibar red colobus monkey, found nowhere else on earth. This half-day tour walks you through the forest with a park ranger to see the monkeys up close, then follows a raised boardwalk through the park's mangrove swamp before you're driven back to your hotel.

how the day unfolds

Forest, monkeys, then mangroves.

A ranger-led walk covers the forest trails first, then the mangrove boardwalk on the way out.

After your hotel pickup, you're driven to Jozani-Chwaka Bay National Park, where a park ranger meets you for a guided walk through the forest. The red colobus monkeys here are used to visitors and often found at ground level in family groups, giving you a good chance to watch and photograph them from a respectful distance as your ranger explains their behavior and the conservation work protecting them.

From the forest, the walk continues onto a raised wooden boardwalk through the park's mangrove swamp, a very different ecosystem where your ranger points out the mangrove trees' unusual root systems and the crabs, mudskippers and birds that live among them. The tour finishes back at the park entrance, where your driver is waiting for the return to your hotel.

frequently asked questions

Questions we get asked most often.

Will I definitely see the monkeys?

Sightings are very likely — the red colobus troops in Jozani are habituated to visitors and regularly seen along the forest trails, though wildlife is never 100% guaranteed.

Is the red colobus monkey found anywhere else?

No, the Zanzibar red colobus is endemic to the island and considered one of Africa's rarest primates, found only in a few forests including Jozani.

Is the walk difficult?

No, the trails and boardwalk are gentle and suitable for most fitness levels, including older travelers and children.

Can this be combined with an east-coast beach day?

Yes, Jozani sits on the route to the east coast beaches, so it pairs naturally with a beach day or another excursion — ask when booking.
