excursion overview

Why Zanzibar is called the Spice Island.

Long before beach tourism, Zanzibar's economy ran on cloves, nutmeg, cinnamon and vanilla, and the archipelago is still known worldwide as the Spice Island. This half-day tour takes you through a working spice farm outside Stone Town, where a local guide walks you among the trees and vines, letting you touch, smell and taste spices straight from the plant. It's a relaxed, hands-on morning that ends with fresh tropical fruit and, if you like, a chance to buy spices to take home.

how the day unfolds

A hands-on morning among the spice trees.

Your guide walks you through the farm plot by plot, letting you handle and taste each spice as you go.

After a mid-morning pickup from your hotel, you're driven inland to a working spice farm, where your guide introduces you to the plants that once made Zanzibar one of the wealthiest trading ports on the Indian Ocean. You'll walk among cloves, nutmeg, cinnamon, black pepper, cardamom and vanilla, touching and smelling each one as your guide explains how it's grown, harvested and used, both in cooking and in traditional medicine.

Along the way there's usually a demonstration from a local coconut climber, and a chance to taste seasonal tropical fruit grown on the farm. The tour is unhurried, with plenty of time for questions, and finishes with an optional visit to a small stall where you can buy spices, oils and soaps to take home before your driver returns you to your hotel.
