Tanzania Entry Requirements
Tanzania Mandatory Travel Insurance 2026: Cost, Coverage and How to Buy
Tanzania's new entry rule starts on 1 October 2026. Here is who needs the policy, what it costs, what it covers, and what it does not.
From 1 October 2026, eligible foreign visitors entering mainland Tanzania must hold a mandatory inbound travel insurance policy. The policy costs the Tanzanian shilling equivalent of USD 44 per person and is valid for up to 92 days. If you enter through mainland Tanzania, you buy it from the National Insurance Corporation (NIC). If you enter through Zanzibar, you buy it from the Zanzibar Insurance Corporation (ZIC).
This guide explains the rule in plain English. We cover who must buy the policy, who is excluded, how to buy it, what it covers, and why you should still carry a separate, comprehensive travel insurance policy. If you are planning a Kilimanjaro climb, a safari or a Zanzibar holiday, read the sections that match your trip.
Our advice is simple. Buy the required policy before you travel, keep the certificate on your phone and on paper, and keep your own comprehensive insurance as well.
The compulsory policy is an entry requirement with basic benefits. It is not a replacement for high-limit medical, trip cancellation or Kilimanjaro trekking insurance.Praise Nyange, Nyange Adventures
Is Travel Insurance Mandatory for Tanzania in 2026?
Yes. From 1 October 2026, foreign visitors who fall under the rule must hold the government inbound travel insurance to enter mainland Tanzania. Here are the main facts.
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| When does it start? | 1 October 2026 for entry through mainland Tanzania. |
| Who needs it? | Foreign nationals entering mainland Tanzania, except residents of East African Community (EAC) and Southern African Development Community (SADC) partner states. |
| How much does it cost? | The Tanzanian shilling equivalent of USD 44 per person. |
| How long is it valid? | Up to 92 days from the arrival date on the policy, with multiple entries. |
| Who sells it? | NIC for mainland entry. ZIC for Zanzibar entry. |
| What does it cover? | Emergency medical treatment, emergency medical evacuation, emergency repatriation and loss of luggage, within policy limits. |
| What proof do I need? | A digital or printed certificate, if an officer asks to see it. |
When Does Tanzania Mandatory Travel Insurance Start?
The Government of Tanzania confirmed the start date through the Ministry of Finance. The rule follows the Inbound Travel Insurance Regulations, published as Government Notice No. 256 of 2026 on 4 September 2026, under section 134A of the Insurance Act.
The rule applies at mainland airports, seaports and land borders. A visitor who must carry the policy but cannot show valid cover may be denied entry. You can buy a policy at the point of entry, but the Ministry of Finance and NIC advise you to arrange it before you arrive. This avoids queues and last minute problems.
Zanzibar introduced its own inbound insurance for tourists in 2024. What is new on 1 October 2026 is the mainland requirement. Our Zanzibar visa and entry guide covers the Zanzibar side in more detail.
Who Needs Mandatory Travel Insurance for Tanzania?
The rule is written for foreign visitors entering mainland Tanzania. NIC's current guidance says it applies to foreign nationals arriving by land border, seaport or airport. This includes:
- Visitors landing at Kilimanjaro International Airport, Julius Nyerere International Airport or any other mainland airport.
- Visitors crossing into mainland Tanzania by road from Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, Zambia, Malawi, Mozambique or another neighbouring country.
- Visitors arriving at a mainland seaport.
- Tourists, business travellers and other foreign visitors who fall within the regulation.
Who Is Exempt From Tanzania Travel Insurance?
NIC states that the mainland cover does not apply to foreigners who are residents of EAC partner states or SADC partner states. Tanzanian citizens are outside the rule's definition of a foreigner.
The wording refers to residents of EAC or SADC states, not simply passport holders. If you think you are exempt, confirm the evidence you need with NIC before you travel. Residence permit holders and other special cases should do the same.
How Much Does Tanzania Mandatory Travel Insurance Cost?
The premium is the Tanzanian shilling equivalent of USD 44 per visitor. It is paid in shillings through the insurer's designated payment system, so the exact amount depends on the exchange rate on the day. Some reports also mention reduced premiums for children and groups. Check the NIC portal for the current price for your party before you pay.
The premium is generally non-refundable, unless a cancellation or another event qualifies under the issued policy. Read the refund terms before you pay, and check that every passport detail is correct.
Add this cost to your trip budget. It is separate from your tour price. To see what a full safari budget looks like, read our Tanzania safari cost guide.
What Does Tanzania Mandatory Travel Insurance Cover?
The law requires four main benefits. The exact limits, exclusions and claim steps are in the policy certificate you receive.
| Benefit | What it addresses | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Emergency medical treatment | Sudden illness or injury that needs urgent care. | Benefit limit, approved providers, excess and pre-authorisation rules. |
| Emergency medical evacuation | Transport to a suitable medical facility when medically necessary. | Geographic limits, approval steps, and whether mountain or air rescue is included. |
| Emergency repatriation | Return to your home country after a qualifying serious emergency. | Medical criteria, provider approval and the maximum benefit. |
| Loss of luggage | Loss, theft or permanent loss of personal baggage on entry. | Per-item limit, evidence needed and claim deadline. |
The public summary does not promise trip cancellation, trip interruption, missed departures, high-value equipment, existing medical conditions, unlimited rescue or every adventure activity. Read your policy wording as soon as you receive it.
How to Buy Tanzania Inbound Travel Insurance From NIC
- Go to the official NIC inbound portal: inbound.nicinsurance.co.tz.
- Enter your passport details, travel dates, purpose of visit and basic personal information.
- Check every name, passport number and date before you pay.
- Pay through the online system. NIC says debit and credit cards are accepted online. Cash may be possible on arrival.
- Download the certificate. Save a copy on your phone that works offline, and print one as a backup.
- Show the certificate if airline staff, immigration officers or the verification system ask for it.
- Save the NIC emergency and claims contacts with your travel documents.
NIC lists 24-hour assistance on 0800 110 041 or +255 736 100 800, and the email wecare.inbound@nicinsurance.co.tz. Please confirm these details on the official portal before you travel. Pay only on the official NIC or ZIC websites, not on other sites that offer to sell the policy for you.
Tell us your dates and where you will land. We will give you a clear pre-travel checklist for your itinerary.
Mainland Tanzania vs Zanzibar: NIC or ZIC Travel Insurance?
Tanzania now has two official inbound insurance providers. Your first point of entry decides which one you use. If an emergency happens anywhere in Tanzania, the insurer that issued your policy provides the service, within the policy terms.
| First entry | Provider | Official portal |
|---|---|---|
| Mainland airport, land border or seaport | NIC | inbound.nicinsurance.co.tz |
| Zanzibar airport or seaport | ZIC | inbound.visitzanzibar.go.tz |
| Mainland first, then Zanzibar | NIC | Keep your NIC certificate. Confirm cross-recognition before you travel. |
| Zanzibar first, then mainland | ZIC | Keep your ZIC certificate. Confirm cross-recognition before you travel. |
Do You Still Need Private Travel Insurance for Tanzania?
Yes. The mandatory policy is an entry requirement with defined basic benefits. Your own policy can cover risks and amounts that the government policy does not. Your private policy does not replace the mandatory one either. Insurance from home does not automatically meet this rule, so you need both.
When you compare comprehensive policies, look for:
- Emergency medical cover with limits that suit international treatment.
- Medical evacuation and repatriation with clear limits.
- Trip cancellation and interruption, including prepaid climb, safari, hotel and flight costs.
- Delayed departure, missed connections and baggage delay.
- Cover that fits your age and medical history, including declared pre-existing conditions where available.
- Adventure cover for your planned altitude and trekking route.
- Safari activities, light aircraft flights inside Tanzania and Zanzibar extensions.
- Personal belongings and special equipment at realistic replacement values.
Kilimanjaro Travel Insurance: Is the Mandatory Policy Enough?
No. Kilimanjaro reaches 5,895 metres. Many standard "worldwide" travel policies limit trekking above a set height, or exclude organised rescue, helicopter evacuation or illness caused by altitude. Before you travel, get written confirmation from your private insurer that it covers the full height of Kilimanjaro, medical treatment, emergency evacuation and repatriation.
Do not treat the mandatory policy as guaranteed helicopter rescue for Kilimanjaro. Emergency medical evacuation is a listed benefit, but approval rules, availability, limits and exclusions all come from the issued policy. Our mountain safety procedures and an insurer's money cover do different jobs. We explain how this works in practice, including what the park rescue fee does and does not pay for, in our Kilimanjaro rescue guide.

Safari Travel Insurance for Tanzania
For safari clients, the main points are simple. Buy the policy before you fly, carry the certificate in your day bag, and check that your private policy covers safari activities and any light aircraft flights. Our tour prices do not include travel insurance or visas, so budget for both.
If you are still choosing a trip, start with our budget safaris, the 4-day Northern Tanzania safari, the 7-day family safari or the 9-day luxury safari. Timing a trip around the herds? Our wildebeest migration guide shows where they are each month. Packing next? Use our Tanzania safari packing list, and keep your insurance certificate with your passport.
Do You Need Two Insurance Policies for Mainland Tanzania and Zanzibar?
Many clients finish a climb or safari with a few days on the coast. Your policy comes from the provider for your first point of entry, and that provider handles covered emergencies across Tanzania. The government notice is built around that first point of entry, but checks at the border are new, so do not pay twice without checking first.
Ask NIC or ZIC to confirm how a mainland policy is treated in Zanzibar, or the other way round, shortly before you fly, and keep your original certificate with you for the whole trip. Our Zanzibar entry guide explains the visa side. The insurance rule does not replace your visa, so also read our Tanzania visa guide for fees, the e-Visa process and passport rules.
Tanzania Entry Requirements 2026: Insurance Checklist Before You Travel
| When | What to do |
|---|---|
| At booking | Add the USD 44 policy to your budget. Start comparing comprehensive insurance. |
| Before final payment | Confirm your private policy covers cancellation of prepaid climbs, safaris, hotels and flights. |
| 2 to 4 weeks before travel | Buy the mandatory policy on the correct official portal for your first point of entry. |
| After you buy | Check your name, passport number, arrival date, validity and the provider's contact details. |
| Before you fly | Save the certificate offline, print a copy and share one with a trusted contact. |
| During the trip | Carry the certificate. In an emergency, call the insurer before you spend large amounts, if the situation allows. |
| If plans change | Ask NIC or ZIC whether dates must be changed, the policy extended or a new one issued. |

Tanzania Travel Insurance FAQ
Is travel insurance mandatory for Tanzania in 2026?
Yes. From 1 October 2026, eligible foreign visitors entering mainland Tanzania must hold the mandatory inbound travel insurance policy.
How much is mandatory Tanzania travel insurance?
The premium is the Tanzanian-shilling equivalent of USD 44 per visitor.
How long is the Tanzania inbound travel insurance valid?
The mainland NIC policy is valid for up to 92 days from arrival and allows multiple entries during that time.
Can I buy Tanzania travel insurance at the airport?
The rules allow purchase before travel or at the point of entry, but buying online in advance is strongly recommended to avoid delays.
What happens if I arrive in Tanzania without insurance?
A traveller who is required to hold the policy may be denied entry.
Does my existing travel insurance replace the mandatory Tanzania policy?
No. Private insurance from home does not automatically satisfy this government requirement. You still need the NIC or ZIC inbound policy unless an official exemption applies.
Do EAC and SADC residents need Tanzania travel insurance?
NIC guidance excludes foreigners who are residents of EAC or SADC partner states. Confirm your eligibility and the proof you need with NIC before travelling.
Does the mandatory insurance cover Kilimanjaro evacuation?
Emergency medical evacuation is a listed benefit, but the public summary does not show that every mountain rescue or helicopter operation is covered. Keep separate high-altitude trekking insurance.
Do I need separate mainland and Zanzibar insurance policies?
You buy from the provider for your first point of entry. Because the system is new, confirm cross-recognition with NIC or ZIC before a combined trip.
Can I extend Tanzania travel insurance beyond 92 days?
NIC says extensions can be arranged before the policy expires. A traveller staying beyond the validity period must obtain continuing cover.
