trip overview

Northern Tanzania's classic circuit, the budget-friendly way.

This 5-day safari takes you from Tarangire National Park through the endless plains of the Serengeti and down into the Ngorongoro Crater, staying in budget camps and a simple lodge along the way rather than premium lodges. You'll travel in a 4×4 safari vehicle with an experienced driver-guide throughout, with two nights of camping inside the Serengeti itself and one night camping up on the Ngorongoro Highlands, right on the crater rim.

Activity level — Low to moderate Game drives are seated throughout. Camping is basic (shared facilities, no electricity in some camps) and nights on the Ngorongoro Highlands can be cold, so warm layers are essential.

You'll spend the afternoon on a game drive through the park before continuing to Fig Tree Lodge for your first night, roughly a 1–2 hour drive away.

You'll enter Central Serengeti in the afternoon with a game drive en route to camp, keeping an eye out for the resident lion prides, leopards and the huge herds that make this one of the most famous ecosystems on earth. Central Serengeti National Park

Full day game driveSame camp as Night 2

A full day is spent exploring Central Serengeti's Seronera Valley, one of the richest game viewing areas in Tanzania year-round, with permanent water drawing predators and grazers regardless of season. Expect good chances of lion, leopard, cheetah, elephant and, depending on the time of year, the passing wildebeest migration.

You'll return to the same budget camp inside Central Serengeti National Park for a second night, with a packed lunch enjoyed out on the plains.

Day4

Serengeti to Ngorongoro Highlands

Morning game drive, then transferCamp on the crater rim

A final morning game drive in the Serengeti before you begin the drive back east, climbing up out of the plains and onto the Ngorongoro Highlands. The scenery changes dramatically here, from open savannah to cool, forested crater rim, often shrouded in mist.

You'll camp for the night on the Ngorongoro Highlands, close to the crater rim and ready for an early descent into the crater itself the next morning. Nights up here are noticeably colder than on the plains below, so warm layers are recommended.

After your crater game drive and a picnic lunch, you'll climb back up to the rim and begin the drive back to Arusha, arriving in the afternoon and marking the end of your tour.

frequently asked questions

Questions we get asked most often.

Where does the tour start and end?

The tour starts with pick-up from Arusha or Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) on Day 1, and ends with a transfer back to Arusha on Day 5 after the Ngorongoro Crater.

What is the camping actually like?

You'll sleep in dome tents at public or budget campsites with shared toilet and shower blocks. Camping equipment is provided; sleeping bags can be rented if you don't want to bring your own.

Can I add extra nights before or after the tour?

Yes. Additional accommodation before and at the end of the tour can be arranged for an extra cost — just let us know when booking.

Will I see the wildebeest migration?

It depends on the time of year and where the herds are at the time of your visit. Central Serengeti offers strong game viewing year-round regardless of the migration's location, but we're happy to advise on timing if seeing the migration is a priority for you.

Do I need a visa or vaccinations for Tanzania?

Most nationalities need a Tanzania e-Visa, available at immigration.go.tz. A yellow fever certificate may also be required depending on your transit country — check with your doctor or travel clinic before departure.

What's your refund policy?

We recommend taking out travel insurance as soon as you confirm your booking. Full cancellation and payment terms are on our booking policy page.
