Day-by-Day Itinerary: 5-Day South Africa Safari—Kruger National Park, Big Five & Panorama Route

Day 1: Transfer to Kruger National Park - Afternoon Safari Drive - Check into Sabie River Lodge

Your South Africa safari adventure begins the moment you’re picked up in Johannesburg and head east through the sweeping Highveld farmlands in a comfortable air-conditioned 7-seater microbus with your experienced Kruger Park guide. Descend into the lush Lowveld, passing through Nelspruit/Mbombela — the vibrant capital of Mpumalanga Province — before stopping for lunch and crossing into Southern Kruger National Park for your first game drive.

As you wind through lightly wooded bushveld, keep your eyes peeled for giraffe, antelope, and elephant roaming freely in their natural habitat. As sunset approaches, make your way to the acclaimed Sabie River Bush Lodge, your overnight base on the banks of the iconic Sabie River. Settle into your comfortable lodge room or en-suite safari tent — complete with air-conditioning and modern furnishings — and unwind on the deck watching hippos and crocodiles in the river below. End the evening with a delicious 3-course dinner at the Gecko Lapa restaurant.

Overnight: Sabie River Bush Lodge – Mid-range lodge, Southern Kruger National Park Meals: Dinner included | Breakfast & lunch not included | Drinks not included.

Day 2: Full Day Big Five Game Drives, Southern Kruger National Park

Rise before dawn for one of the most exhilarating experiences a South Africa safari has to offer — a sunrise game drive through Southern Kruger National Park on an open safari vehicle. As the morning light breaks over the bushveld, your expert guide leads you through prime Big Five territory, tracking lion, leopard, elephant, rhino, and buffalo along the legendary Sabie River and its surrounding woodland habitats. The river corridor is one of Kruger’s most productive wildlife corridors, offering exceptional opportunities for predator sightings and dramatic wildlife encounters at the water’s edge.

After approximately three hours in the bush, stop at a rest camp for breakfast packs and a moment to recharge before continuing your mid-morning game drive, following up on the day’s top reported wildlife sightings. A midday refreshment stop gives you time to browse the curio shop before heading out again on your afternoon game drive. As the sun dips low, return to Sabie River Bush Lodge for a refreshing swim, then gather on the deck for sundowners overlooking the Sabie River — one of the most iconic safari moments in Africa. Round off the day with dinner in the lodge’s licensed restaurant.

Overnight: Sabie River Bush Lodge – Mid-range lodge, Southern Kruger National Park Meals: Breakfast & dinner included | Lunch not included | Drinks not included Highlights: Sunrise Big Five game drive, Sabie River wildlife corridor, predator tracking, sundowners on the river deck

Day 3: Southern to Central Kruger National Park | Big Five Game Drives & Sunset Safari, Satara Camp

Begin your third day of safari with breakfast on the deck at 06h30, soaking in one last view of the Sabie River before heading north on a morning game drive through Southern Kruger’s diverse bushveld in search of the Big Five. Keep a sharp eye out for the elusive leopard as you traverse the landscape, with increasing grasslands opening up near the famous Tshokwane picnic site — a classic Kruger stopover where your guide checks the live sightings board for the day’s most exciting wildlife activity.

Continue north into Central Kruger National Park, passing through open savanna plains and visiting productive waterholes that attract elephant, lion, buffalo, and a wealth of plains game. Around midday, arrive at the iconic Satara Rest Camp — one of Kruger’s most celebrated camps and renowned as one of the best lion-sighting areas in the entire park. Check into your air-conditioned chalet and take time to explore the camp’s pool, shop, and deli-café before your afternoon adventure begins.

As the sun descends over the vast open plains, join a guided sunset game drive in a national parks spotlight safari vehicle — purpose-built for tracking nocturnal wildlife including hyena, leopard, lion, and other elusive creatures that come alive after dark. Return to camp for a memorable dinner at the Cattle Baron Bistro, famous throughout Kruger for its outstanding steaks.

Overnight: Satara Rest Camp – Mid-range rest camp, Central Kruger National Park Meals: Breakfast & dinner included | Lunch not included | Drinks not included Highlights: Morning Big Five game drive, Tshokwane sightings stop, Central Kruger waterhole visits, nocturnal spotlight safari, Satara Rest Camp

Day 4: Final Kruger Game Drive & Panorama Route | Blyde River Canyon, God's Window & Three Rondavels

Start your fourth day before sunrise for one last thrilling game drive through Central Kruger National Park, making your way towards the exit gate with one final opportunity to tick off any remaining Big Five sightings. Review your wildlife checklist as your guide navigates the bush, before stopping at a charming country restaurant for a well-earned breakfast surrounded by the beautiful Mpumalanga countryside.

The remainder of the day is dedicated to one of South Africa’s most spectacular scenic drives — the world-famous Panorama Route. Journey through dramatic highland landscapes to the breathtaking Blyde River Canyon Nature Reserve, home to the iconic Three Rondavels — three massive cylinder-shaped rock formations rising above one of the largest and greenest canyons on earth. Continue to God’s Window, where sweeping panoramic views stretch endlessly over the Lowveld escarpment far below, and explore Bourke’s Luck Potholes, a remarkable series of cylindrical rock sculptures carved by centuries of swirling water at the confluence of the Blyde and Treur rivers.

Browse vibrant roadside African curio markets, stop for lunch, then wind down Kowyn’s Pass through lush subtropical forest to the town of Hazyview, where you check into the comfortable Hazyview Sun Hotel — a welcoming 4-star property complete with pool, bar, and restaurant — for your final safari overnight.

Overnight: Hazyview Sun Hotel – 4-star hotel, Hazyview, Mpumalanga Meals: Breakfast & dinner included | Lunch not included | Drinks not included Highlights: Final Kruger Big Five game drive, Blyde River Canyon, Three Rondavels, God’s Window, Bourke’s Luck Potholes, Panorama Route scenic drive, African curio markets

Your guide will share insider knowledge about the rich and fertile Lowveld region, one of South Africa’s most productive agricultural areas renowned for its abundant subtropical fruit orchards, tropical forests, and diverse flora.

Depart Hazyview and journey west through scenic orchards and pine plantations, passing through the bustling city of Nelspruit/Mbombela — capital of Mpumalanga Province — before ascending back up to the Highveld plateau for the final leg of your journey to Johannesburg.
