Day-by-Day Itinerary: 10-Day Kenya & Tanzania Safari – Maasai Mara, Serengeti & Ngorongoro

Day 1 : Lake Nakuru National Park

Start your day with an early morning pickup and head south toward Lake Nakuru National Park, one of Kenya’s most celebrated wildlife destinations. Situated in the heart of the Great Rift Valley, Lake Nakuru is a world-renowned alkaline lake and recognized as one of the Natural Wonders of the World. The lake is famously home to spectacular concentrations of flamingos — at peak times, nearly 2 million birds gather along its shores, painting a stunning pink band around the water’s edge.

Beyond its famous flamingos, Lake Nakuru is also a protected rhino sanctuary, sheltering a thriving population of both black and white rhinos, making it one of the best places in Kenya for rhino sightings. Arrive in time for lunch, then set out on an afternoon game drive to explore the park’s diverse wildlife and scenery. End the day with dinner and an overnight stay at your lodge or campsite.

Main Destination: Lake Nakuru National Park, Kenya

Accommodation: Lake Nakuru Lodge — a comfortable mid-range lodge located inside the park.

  • Meals included: Lunch & Dinner (Breakfast not included)
  • Drinking water included (Other drinks not included)
Day 2: Masai Mara National Reserve

Begin your day with an early morning drive to the iconic Masai Mara National Reserve, one of Africa’s greatest and most celebrated wildlife destinations. The Mara remains one of the last places on Earth where wildlife roams freely in numbers that echo Africa’s untouched past — a truly rare and humbling experience. As the northern extension of the vast Serengeti ecosystem, the Masai Mara is world-famous for hosting the Great Wildebeest Migration, one of nature’s most breathtaking spectacles, where thousands of wildebeest and zebras thunder across the plains followed closely by lions, cheetahs, and other predators.

Arrive in time for lunch, then head out for an exciting afternoon game drive through the reserve’s sweeping grasslands and riverine forests.

Accommodation is flexible — upgrade to a premium luxury option or choose a more budget-friendly alternative to suit your travel style and budget.

Day 3-4: Masai Mara National Reserve

After breakfast, enjoy a full-day game drive deep into the Masai Mara, with a packed lunch served out in the bush. The Mara is legendary for its black-maned lions—among the most impressive in Africa—and offers one of the best chances anywhere to spot the Big Five in a single morning’s game drive. The reserve’s cheetah population is equally remarkable; many are so accustomed to vehicles that they seek shade underneath them or climb on the roof for a better view of their prey, offering photographers and wildlife lovers truly once-in-a-lifetime moments.

For birdwatching enthusiasts, the Masai Mara is a paradise, with nearly 500 recorded bird species including 16 types of eagle, multiple hawks and falcons, 6 vulture species, 8 stork species, and the legendary Kori Bustard — the world’s heaviest flying bird — among many others.

Day 5: From Masai Mara National Reserve to Serengeti National Park

Today marks an exciting cross-border transition as you journey from the Masai Mara in Kenya to the world-renowned Serengeti National Park in Tanzania, crossing through the Isebania border. While this transfer spans most of the day, the journey itself is an adventure — you’ll enjoy a morning game drive through the Masai Mara before crossing the border, then transition seamlessly into an afternoon game drive through the Serengeti en route to your camp, making the most of every hour on the road.

The Serengeti National Park is Tanzania’s oldest and most visited park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site stretching over 14,000 square kilometers of endless golden plains, and home to the greatest concentration of wildlife on the planet. Arrive at your luxury tented camp as the African sun sets over the savannah — a perfect introduction to life in the Serengeti.

Accommodation is flexible — upgrade to a higher-end option or select a more budget-conscious alternative to match your travel preferences and budget.

Day 6-7: Serengeti National Park

Spend a full day exploring the legendary Serengeti National Park, the undisputed home of the Great Wildebeest Migration and one of the most extraordinary wildlife destinations on the planet. The name Serengeti means “endless plains” in Kiswahili — and standing amid its vast 18,000 sq km (6,900 sq miles) of open savannah, it’s easy to understand why.

The park supports an astonishing 2 million large animals, including over a million wildebeest, hundreds of thousands of plains zebras, and vast herds of Thomson’s gazelles. Alongside these iconic species roam Africa’s most formidable predators — lions, cheetahs, leopards, and spotted hyenas — as well as smaller wildlife such as rock hyrax and vervet monkeys. Birdwatchers will also be delighted, with nearly 500 bird species recorded across the park.

After breakfast, set out for morning and afternoon game drives, immersing yourself in the Serengeti’s breathtaking landscapes and exceptional wildlife action at the best hours of the day. For those seeking extra adventure, the day also offers the option to visit the Olduvai Gorge — one of the world’s most important paleoanthropological sites — or take a magical hot air balloon safari over the endless plains at sunrise, a truly unforgettable experience.

Day 8: Serengeti National Park to Ngorongoro Conservation Area

Rise before dawn for an early morning game drive — the best time to witness the Serengeti’s wildlife at its most active, and to catch a breathtaking African sunrise painting the sky over the endless plains. Return to camp for a leisurely brunch before setting off on your transfer to one of the most remarkable places on Earth — the Ngorongoro Crater.

Often described as Africa’s Garden of Eden, the Ngorongoro Crater is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a true natural wonder. With crater walls rising 2,000 feet high and a floor spanning 102 square miles, this ancient volcanic caldera functions as a self-contained world — a virtual Noah’s Ark teeming with virtually every wildlife species indigenous to East Africa. It holds the greatest concentration of wildlife on the planet, with lions, elephants, hippos, hyenas, wildebeest, zebras, and the critically endangered black rhino all thriving within its walls.

The crater’s diverse landscape is equally stunning — a river, several shimmering swamps draped in what looks like rising mist, vast open plains, dense forest, and a glittering soda lake fringed with flamingos. The resident bull elephants are particularly impressive, boasting some of the largest tusks in Africa thanks to the mineral-rich volcanic soil and grasses. For those seeking an even deeper connection with the landscape, an optional afternoon walking safari in the Ngorongoro Highlands offers a rare and exhilarating perspective on this incredible ecosystem.

Accommodation is flexible — upgrade to a higher-end option or select a more budget-conscious alternative to match your preferences and budget.

Accommodation: Ngorongoro Serena Safari Lodge — a stunning luxury lodge perched on the rim of the Ngorongoro Crater, offering panoramic views over one of Africa’s greatest natural wonders.

Day 9: Ngorongoro Crater

Wake before sunrise for an early descent down into the Ngorongoro Crater floor for a full day of extraordinary wildlife viewing in one of the most awe-inspiring places on the planet. Spend the morning tracking lions, spotting black rhinos, and watching massive elephant herds move across the crater’s open plains, all within the dramatic walls of this ancient caldera. Break for a picnic lunch beside the hippo lake, where pods of hippos wallow and thousands of flamingos line the shallows — a truly iconic African scene. Continue with more exciting afternoon game viewing before ascending the steep crater walls and heading toward your next destination.

Your transfer takes you to Lake Manyara National Park, a hidden gem of northern Tanzania nestled beneath a dramatic escarpment along the Great Rift Valley. Alternatively, the world-class Tarangire National Park makes an excellent substitute — particularly recommended for visits between June and September when wildlife concentrations around the Tarangire River are exceptional. En route, consider a fascinating optional stop at the Oldonyo Sambu Maasai Village, offering a rare and authentic glimpse into traditional Maasai culture and daily life.

Accommodation is flexible — upgrade to a higher-end option or select a more budget-conscious alternative to match your preferences and budget.

Day 10: Lake Manyara National Park - Return Arusha for Departure

After breakfast, depart for a full day game drive through Lake Manyara National Park, driving across the breathtaking landscape of the Great Rift Valley en route. This enchanting and often underrated park is celebrated for its stunning natural beauty — lush acacia forests interspersed with towering fig and mahogany trees that shelter large troops of baboons and playful blue monkeys overhead.

Lake Manyara is a birdwatcher’s dream, boasting one of the most diverse and spectacular bird collections in Tanzania, with thousands of flamingos wading along the shimmering lakeshore. The park also supports impressive numbers of buffalo, giraffe, elephant, and impala, alongside a thriving hippo lake where large pods gather throughout the day. Manyara is perhaps most famously known for its tree-climbing lions — a rare and remarkable behavior unique to this park and only a handful of places in Africa. Game drives wind along the lakeshore, rewarding visitors with stunning views of wildlife in the foreground set against the shimmering lake and open plains stretching to the horizon.

For those seeking more adventure, optional activities include a bicycle tour through the surrounding landscape or a thrilling night game drive to spot nocturnal wildlife after dark.

In the afternoon, transfer to Arusha, Tanzania’s safari capital, marking the end of your incredible East Africa safari journey.

Alternatively, instead of ending in Arusha, you can extend your adventure with a 1 or 2-night safari to Amboseli National Park in Kenya — home to Africa’s most iconic elephant herds against the backdrop of Mount Kilimanjaro — finishing your tour back in Nairobi.
