Starting from $2,800 for private climbs

Trek overview

Want a unique Kilimanjaro adventure?  The Northern Circuit might be perfect for you! This newer route starts like the Lemosho Route, approaching the mountain from the west.  But get this – instead of going south, the Northern Circuit goes all around Kilimanjaro on the quieter northern slopes, offering incredible views you won’t find anywhere else!

Taking 9 days, it’s the longest route, but also one of the least crowded. Plus, the extra time helps your body get used to the high altitude, making it a great choice for first-time climbers.

Itinerary

Upon landing at Kilimanjaro Airport (JRO), our friendly driver will be waiting for you just outside customs control, holding a Nyange Adventure sign with your name on it. They’ll assist you with your luggage and whisk you comfortably to your Moshi hotel.

At the hotel, your expert guide will conduct a pre-climb briefing to answer any questions you have and provide important details about the trek. This includes an equipment check to ensure you have everything for a safe and comfortable climb. Don’t worry if you’re missing something! Good quality gear can be rented locally at reasonable prices. If you arrive at night, the briefing and equipment check might be scheduled for the following morning. With everything prepared, you can relax in Moshi, ready to embark on your exciting Kilimanjaro challenge!

After enjoying breakfast at your hotel, we will drive you to Londorossi Gate, the official starting point of your trek. The excitement will be contagious as you gaze upon the lush rainforest blanketing the lower slopes of Kilimanjaro.

Your first day eases you into the climb with a gentle 3-4 hour hike through this stunning rainforest. The journey ends at Mti Mkubwa Camp, your home for the night.

Day 2 leads you towards the historical Shira Plateau, a collapsed volcanic crater steeped in history. Witness panoramic views of the majestic Kibo peak, your ultimate summit goal. As you ascend, the landscape transforms, offering a glimpse into the mountain’s diverse ecological zones. Reach new heights and experience the thrill of camping on Shira Plateau, surrounded by breathtaking views.

On Day 3, enjoy an acclimatization hike, taking in the beauty of the Shira Plateau. Explore the area and potentially encounter unique wildlife adapted to the high-altitude environment. Reach new heights at Shira 2 Camp, nestled amongst stunning scenery.

Day 4 on the Northern Circuit is a challenging but rewarding hike! Trek for 7-9 hours through diverse landscapes. Start on the Shira Plateau, and then climb the western slopes of Kibo reaching Lava Tower. Enjoy a picnic lunch and scenic views. Descend to Moir Hutfor rest. This day is key for getting your body used to the high altitude.

Day 5 on the Northern Circuit is a 5-7 hour adventure to Buffalo Camp (4,020m). Hike out of Moir Hut and conquer the Lent Hills for amazing views. The trail offers unique landscapes and lets you experience Kilimanjaro’s wild beauty.  You’ll cross a rock field and enjoy scenic plains stretching towards Kenya before reaching Buffalo Camp for rest.

Day 6: Hike like a pioneer on the rarely-used Buffalo Ridge!  This adventure takes you through hidden valleys on Kilimanjaro’s wild north side.  Imagine feeling like the first explorers as you conquer sparse landscapes unlike anywhere else on the mountain.  Your final destination today is Third Cave Camp, a spot for the night with epic views of Kilimanjaro’s vast northern slopes.

Today’s a 5-7 hour trek through a cool, high-altitude desert.  You’ll steadily climb towards School Hut Camp, feeling proud with each step.  You will Third Cave Camp behind and get closer to the top of Kilimanjaro!  School Hut Camp is your home a  rest and an early dinner before your amazing summit night adventure.

Get ready for the ultimate challenge – summit day!  This is a long but rewarding day.  Around midnight, you’ll start your tough 11-15 hour trek to Uhuru Peak, Africa’s highest point at a staggering 5,895 meters (19,341ft).  The climb tests your limits, but the breathtaking glacial views will leave you speechless.

After reaching the peak, celebrate your incredible achievement and soak in the stunning scenery!  Then, begin your descent to Horombo Camp (3,720 meters) for a well-deserved rest and dinner.

Enjoy a delicious breakfast before tackling the easiest part of the climb – a beautiful 5-6 hour walk down through the rainforest, leading you to Marangu Gate. From there, your driver takes you back to Moshi, where it’s time to celebrate!

Say goodbye to your amazing mountain crew and show your appreciation with tips. But the party doesn’t stop there! Join your fellow adventurers for a fun farewell bash at Nyange Farm. Share stories by a crackling bonfire, enjoy delicious Tanzanian food, and even plant a tree – a lasting reminder of your incredible Kilimanjaro achievement!
