5 Days Marangu Trek - Nyange Adventures

5 Days Marangu trek

Starting from $1,600 for private climbs

Trek overview

Kilimanjaro Marangu Route can take five or six days; however, we always advise choosing the longer route for the best chance of acclimatization and reaching the Mount Kilimanjaro summit. Because this route requires less of a time commitment (and financial commitment), and because of the relative comfort of the mountain huts, this route is chosen often by less committed trekkers. For this reason along with the short time for your body to acclimate to the altitude, this route does not have as high of a success rate as other routes.

Itinerary

Upon your arrival at Kilimanjaro Airport (JRO) our driver will be waiting just outside the Customs Control area with a Nyange Adventure sign with your name on it. After he loads your bags into our van, he will drive you to your hotel in Moshi. Once you are settled in, your guide will go through a pre-climb briefing where all your questions will be answered and important information will be given. There will be an equipment check to ensure that you have everything needed to make your climb comfortable and safe. If you need any equipment, any/all items can be rented locally of good quality at a fair price. Note that if your arrival is at night, the briefing and equipment check may be done early the next morning instead.

Day 1 of your Kilimanjaro climb via the Marangu route starts with a drive to Marangu Gate. After registering, you’ll begin your trek! Hike for 4-5 hours through a beautiful rainforest. Your guide will show you interesting plants and animals, like monkeys and birds. Your final destination of the day is Mandara Hut, which has beds, water, and toilets. Enjoy this scenic hike as you start your Kilimanjaro adventure!

Today’s trek gets a bit steeper as you hike for 6-8 hours towards Horombo Hut.  The trail takes you through beautiful montane forest, then opens up into a cool moorland zone.  Imagine rolling hills covered in giant heather trees!  Keep an eye out for unique plants like the giant lobelia and towering groundsels, reaching up to 16 feet tall!

After conquering this diverse landscape, you’ll reach Horombo Hut, a “village” of cabins.  Here, you can freshen up with hot water, enjoy a delicious dinner, and relax before your next adventure.

Rise early for a stunning sunrise – a great photo moment! After breakfast, continue your slow trek through heathland. The landscape soon turns almost like the moon as you reach the saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo, Kilimanjaro’s peak. Be aware of altitude sickness and tell your guide if you feel unwell. Soon, amazing summit views will appear! Your rest stop for the night is Kibo Hut, a basic shelter. Get a good night’s sleep – tomorrow’s the big summit push!

Around midnight, you’ll embark on a grueling 6-7 hour climb to Uhuru Peak, Africa’s highest point at a staggering 5,895 meters!  The climb is tough, but the reward is incredible – breathtaking views from the top of Kilimanjaro, the “Roof of Africa.”

After celebrating your achievement at the peak, you’ll begin a long descent (7-8 hours) back to Horombo Hut for a well-deserved rest and dinner.  This is a long but rewarding day that will test your limits, but the memories will last a lifetime!

Enjoy a delicious breakfast before conquering the easiest part of the climb – a beautiful 5-6 hour walk down through the rainforest, leading you back to Marangu Gate. From there, your driver takes you back to Moshi, where it’s time to celebrate!
In the evening enjoy a celebratory farewell party at Nyange Farm with your fellow trekkers and your mountain crew. Share stories by a bonfire, savor Tanzanian cuisine, and plant a tree – a lasting reminder of your Kilimanjaro triumph!
