Mount Meru Tanzania Trekking, at 4566 meters, is Tanzania’s second highest mountain. Mount Meru is located in Tanzania’s Arusha National Park and has some of the most breathtaking scenery and wildlife diversity of any mountain in the country. Meru trek is a difficult trek due to the rocky ridges and steep ascent to the peak. However, it is one of the best ways to gain experience with high altitude trekking and to acclimate for those who want to climb Mount Kilimanjaro. Mount Meru trek takes you through areas where you can get a glimpse of Mount Kilimanjaro.

Arrival Day
Upon your arrival at Kilimanjaro Airport (JRO) our driver will be waiting just outside the Customs Control area with a Nyange Adventure sign with your name on it. After he loads your bags into our van, he will drive you to your hotel in Moshi. Once you are settled in, your guide will go through a pre-climb briefing where all your questions will be answered and important information will be given. There will be an equipment check to ensure that you have everything needed to make your climb comfortable and safe. If you need any equipment, any/all items can be rented locally of good quality at a fair price. Note that if your arrival is at night, the briefing and equipment check may be done early the next morning instead.

Day 1: Moshi- Momella gate - Mariakamba Hut
Drive: 1 Hr Hike Distance: 10 km, 4 - 5 hrs, 1000m ascent Alt: 2516 Dinner and overnight: Miriakamba Hut The adventure begins with a drive from Moshi to Momella Gate, which takes approximately one hour. Once you arrive at Momella Gate, the starting point of the Mount Meru trek, you'll go through the necessary registration and permit procedures. From there, the hike begins, taking you through a picturesque route that winds through the dense montane forest. Along the way, keep an eye out for black and white colobus monkeys and various bird species. After a 10-kilometer trek lasting about 4 to 5 hours, you'll reach Mariakamba Hut, situated at an altitude of 2,516 meters. Enjoy a well-deserved dinner and spend the night at the hut.

Day 2: Miriakamba Hut to Saddle Hut
Hike Distance: 4km, 2-3 hrs, 1050m ascent Alt: 3566 Dinner and overnight: Saddle Hut. After a good night's rest and breakfast at Mariakamba Hut, you'll resume the journey towards Saddle Hut. The trail ascends gradually, leading you through heather and moorland landscapes, which offer stunning views of Mount Meru's crater and the surrounding scenery. Covering a distance of 4 kilometers, this portion of the hike takes approximately 2 to 3 hours. Eventually, you'll reach Saddle Hut, located at an altitude of 3,566 meters. Here, you'll settle in for the night, enjoying a hearty dinner and preparing for the summit push the following day.

Day 3: Saddle Hut to Socialist Peak to Miriakamba Hut
Elevation: 3500m/11483ft to 4562m/14967ft down to 2500m/8202ft Distance: 19km/12mi Hiking Time: 10-12 hours Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner We get up shortly after midnight and eat a light meal to keep our energy levels high. After finishing our meal, we begin the final ascent to Socialist Peak. This ascent will be steep, with us passing through gravel and rocky cliffs. This is the most mentally and physically demanding part of the journey. When you reach the summit, you will be rewarded with breathtaking views of the Meru Crater and the Ash cone. Over the rocky ridge, there is a chance of seeing wildlife such as mountain Reedbucks and Klipspringers. We begin our descent from the summit by heading straight down to the Miriakamba hut.

Day 4: Miriakamba Hut to Momella gate
Elevation: 2500m/8202ft to 1500m/4921ft Distance: 14km/8.5mi Hiking Time: 4-5 hours Meals: Breakfast and Lunch After breakfast, we will continue our descent to the Momella Gate, changing our route and taking the southern route down, resulting in a change in distance trekked on this day. We'll also walk through the breathtaking Fig Tree Arch. The Nyange Adventures vehicle will be waiting for you at Momella gate to transport you back to your Moshi hotel (around 1 hour and 30 minutes).

Departure Day
Our driver will be available at any time to take you to Kilimanjaro Airport for your flight home (or to Zanzibar?). Breakfast is included in your Mt Meru Trek Package. Hotel Checkout is at 10am but if you have a later flight we might be able to negotiate a late checkout or book a dayroom for you (additional charge for a dayroom).
