Complete 10-Day Itinerary

From arrival at Kilimanjaro Airport to your summit success and return — every detail of your journey mapped out

Location: Kilimanjaro Airport → Moshi
Accommodation: Kibo View Farm Lodge
Meals: Lunch & Dinner

Welcome to Tanzania!

Upon landing at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), our friendly driver will be waiting for you with a Nyange Adventures welcome sign. Enjoy a scenic transfer to Kibo View Farm Lodge in Moshi, where you'll settle into your comfortable accommodation.

In the evening, your expert mountain guide will conduct a comprehensive pre-climb briefing covering:

  • Detailed route overview and daily expectations
  • Equipment check and gear recommendations
  • Acclimatization strategies and health monitoring
  • Safety protocols and emergency procedures
  • Porter team introduction and tipping guidelines

Enjoy an organic farm-fresh dinner featuring local Tanzanian cuisine and relax at our beautiful lodge. Watch for Mt. Kilimanjaro to appear above Moshi's rooftops to the north — the best views are usually in early morning or late afternoon when clouds clear.

Distance: 6 km
Hiking Time: 3–4 hours
Elevation Gain: 720m

First Day on the Mountain

After breakfast, the group departs Moshi for a 3-hour drive to Londorossi Gate (2,100m) on the western side of Kilimanjaro. Complete registration formalities while porters organize and weigh equipment.

The Trek: Begin hiking through lush montane rainforest rich with endemic flora and fauna. The trail is gentle and well-maintained, winding through towering trees draped with moss and lichen. Keep eyes open for black and white colobus monkeys, blue monkeys, and colorful bird species including the silvery-cheeked hornbill.

The pace is deliberately slow ("pole pole" in Swahili) to help everyone adjust to altitude and find their rhythm. Your guides will teach proper breathing techniques and monitor the group's condition.

Camp Arrival: Reach Mti Mkubwa Camp (Big Tree Camp) in the afternoon. Your crew will have tents set up, hot drinks ready, and dinner preparation underway. Evening briefing covers tomorrow's route, followed by a hearty meal and early rest.

Pro Tip: Stay hydrated! Aim for 3-4 liters of water daily to aid acclimatization.

Distance: 8 km
Hiking Time: 5–6 hours
Elevation Gain: 680m

Emerging into Moorland

After breakfast and camp breakdown, depart the rainforest zone. The trail transitions from dense forest to heath and moorland — an otherworldly landscape of giant heathers, protea flowers, and unique alpine plants.

The Trek: The path becomes more open with expansive views of the mountain and surrounding valleys. Cross several streams and gradual ridges. The vegetation changes dramatically as you gain altitude — trees give way to hardy shrubs and tussock grasses adapted to thin air and temperature extremes.

Take regular breaks for water, snacks, and photos. Your guide will point out interesting flora including the endemic Kilimanjaro impatiens and explain the mountain's unique ecosystems.

Shira Plateau Views: Arrive at Shira 1 Camp positioned on the vast Shira Plateau, one of the highest plateaus on Earth. The views are spectacular — Kibo Peak rises to the northeast, Mount Meru dominates the western horizon, and on clear days you can see the Rift Valley stretching below.

Evening brings dramatic sunsets painting the mountain in golden hues. Socialize with fellow climbers, enjoy hot drinks and dinner, and rest well for tomorrow's journey across the plateau.

Distance: 7 km
Hiking Time: 3–4 hours
Elevation Gain: 340m

Strategic Acclimatization

This shorter day is deliberately designed to support altitude adaptation. The moderate distance and gentle elevation gain allow your body to produce more red blood cells and adjust to lower oxygen levels.

The Trek: Walk across the stunning Shira Plateau with 360-degree views. The landscape is surreal — a vast volcanic plateau dotted with unique rock formations and hardy alpine plants. Kibo Peak dominates the skyline ahead, its glacier-clad summit gleaming in sunlight.

The trail is relatively flat with gentle undulations. This easier terrain lets you focus on breathing, pacing, and enjoying the otherworldly scenery. Many climbers take advantage of the relaxed pace to capture photos and soak in the mountain environment.

Early Arrival Benefits: Reach Shira 2 Camp by early afternoon, giving ample time for rest and recovery. After lunch and settling in, guides may lead an optional short acclimatization walk — typically 30-60 minutes up a nearby ridge, then returning to camp to sleep at the lower elevation.

This "climb high, sleep low" principle is crucial for summit success. Evening tea, hearty dinner, and thorough briefing for tomorrow's important acclimatization day.

Health Note: Mild headache, slight nausea, or fatigue are normal at this altitude. Report any symptoms to your guide for monitoring.

Distance: 10 km
Hiking Time: 6–8 hours
Max Altitude: 4,630m

Critical Acclimatization Day — "Climb High, Sleep Low"

This is one of the most important days for summit success. You'll ascend to 4,630m before descending to sleep at 3,976m — the classic altitude adaptation strategy used by mountaineers worldwide.

Morning Ascent: Leave Shira 2 Camp and traverse the alpine desert zone. The landscape becomes increasingly barren and dramatic — volcanic rock, scattered boulders, and minimal vegetation create a Mars-like terrain. The trail climbs steadily toward Lava Tower, a massive 300-foot volcanic plug rising from the plateau.

Lava Tower (4,630m): Arrive at this iconic landmark for lunch and extended rest. Spending 1-2 hours at this altitude is crucial for acclimatization — your body responds by increasing oxygen-carrying capacity. Many climbers feel the altitude here (headache, breathlessness, fatigue) — this is normal and expected. Your guides monitor everyone carefully with pulse oximeters and health checks.

Descent to Barranco: After lunch, descend through the stunning Senecio forest. Giant groundsels (Dendrosenecio kilimanjari) — prehistoric-looking plants that grow only on Kilimanjaro — create a surreal landscape. The trail drops into the beautiful Barranco Valley.

Barranco Camp: One of the most scenic camps on the mountain, nestled in a valley surrounded by towering cliffs. The famous Barranco Wall looms above — tomorrow's challenge. As you descend, many climbers notice their symptoms disappearing — evidence that acclimatization is working.

Evening brings spectacular sunsets with the Western Breach towering overhead. Celebrate reaching this key milestone with your group over dinner.

Why This Works: Ascending to 4,630m triggers physiological adaptation, but sleeping at 3,976m allows better recovery. This maximizes acclimatization while minimizing altitude illness risk.

Distance: 5 km
Hiking Time: 4–5 hours
Elevation: Minimal gain

Conquering the Barranco Wall

Today's highlight is scaling the impressive Barranco Wall — a 257-meter rock face that looks intimidating but is easier than it appears. This is one of Kilimanjaro's most memorable experiences.

The Barranco Wall: After breakfast, begin the ascent. The "wall" is actually a series of rock scrambles with well-established paths. While it looks steep, it requires no technical climbing skills. Your guides will demonstrate proper hand and foot placements, and the pace is very slow and controlled.

The climb typically takes 1-2 hours with frequent breaks. Some sections involve using hands for balance ("scrambling"), but there's no exposure or dangerous terrain. Guides position themselves to assist anyone who needs help. Many climbers find this the most fun and adventurous part of the trek — a break from endless walking!

Kissing Rock: Encounter the famous "Kissing Rock" — a narrow passage where you must press close to the wall while traversing a ledge. It's perfectly safe but makes for great photos and stories.

After the Wall: Once atop, the trail continues through the unique Senecio forest and across several ridges and valleys. The route follows a series of up-and-down sections — gaining altitude then descending, then climbing again. This roller-coaster terrain aids acclimatization through varied elevation exposure.

Karanga Camp: The smallest and most intimate camp on the route. Positioned on a rocky ridge, it offers spectacular views of the Southern Ice Field and the summit. Being a shorter day allows rest and preparation for tomorrow's pre-summit push.

Guides conduct gear checks, review summit night procedures, and ensure everyone is properly prepared. Hydrate thoroughly, rest well, and mentally prepare for the final high-altitude days ahead.

Wall Tips: Take your time, use three points of contact, and trust your guides. It's much easier than it looks!

Distance: 4 km
Hiking Time: 4–5 hours
Elevation Gain: 678m

Final Approach to Base Camp

Today you reach Barafu Camp — the launch point for your summit attempt. "Barafu" means "ice" in Swahili, aptly named for the cold, barren, windswept conditions at this high-altitude outpost.

The Trek: Leave Karanga on a steady uphill path. The landscape becomes increasingly harsh and desolate — a true alpine desert with scattered volcanic rock, gravel slopes, and zero vegetation. The air is noticeably thin, making even moderate exertion feel challenging.

The trail is exposed with minimal shelter from wind or sun. Pace is deliberately slow with frequent rest stops. Your guides monitor everyone closely as the altitude affects each person differently. Use proper breathing techniques — slow, deep breaths maximize oxygen intake.

Barafu Base Camp (4,673m): Arrive at this stark, rocky camp perched on a narrow ridge. Views are extraordinary — the summit looms directly above, glaciers gleaming in sunlight. To the south, you can see all the way to Mawenzi Peak and beyond to the plains of Tanzania.

Summit Preparation: Arrive around midday to maximize rest time. After lunch and settling in:

  • Comprehensive summit night briefing from guides
  • Final gear check — layers, headlamp batteries, water bottles
  • Early dinner (around 5-6 PM)
  • Attempt to sleep (challenging at this altitude, but rest is crucial)
  • Wake-up call around 11:30 PM for midnight departure

Preparation Tips: Organize all summit gear before sleeping. Fill water bottles (use insulated covers to prevent freezing). Charge electronics. Eat well even if appetite is diminished. Rest horizontally even if you can't sleep — physical rest still aids recovery.

The atmosphere is electric with nervous anticipation. Fellow climbers share encouragement and excitement. Tonight, you summit Kilimanjaro!

Sleep Strategy: Don't stress if you can't sleep. Most climbers don't. Just lie down, breathe deeply, and rest your body.

Distance: 17 km total
Time: 11–14 hours total
Summit: 5,895m (19,341 ft)

The Roof of Africa Awaits

Midnight Departure (23:00-24:00): Wake to hot tea and biscuits. Layer all warm clothing — temperatures can reach -20°C (-4°F) with windchill. Headlamps on, walking poles ready, the team begins the summit push under a canopy of African stars.

Ascent to Stella Point (4,673m → 5,756m | 5-7 hours): The route zigzags up steep scree and volcanic gravel. This is mentally and physically the most challenging section — steep grade, extreme cold, thin air, and darkness. Progress is slow — extremely slow. "Pole pole" becomes a mantra.

The trail switchbacks endlessly. One foot in front of the other. Focus on breathing — deep inhale through nose, exhale through mouth. Don't think about the summit, just the next 20 steps. Regular short breaks every 30-45 minutes. Guides monitor each person's condition continuously.

Around 5:30 AM, the sky begins lightening. Then, one of the most spectacular sights on Earth — sunrise from Stella Point, 5,756m above sea level. The glaciers glow gold and pink. Below, clouds blanket Tanzania like an ocean. Emotions run high — tears, hugs, disbelief.

Stella Point to Uhuru Peak (5,756m → 5,895m | 45-90 min): The final push follows the crater rim. You're above the clouds, walking past ancient glaciers. The air is impossibly thin — every step requires concentration. But the end is in sight.

UHURU PEAK — 5,895m (19,341 ft): The summit of Mount Kilimanjaro. The highest point in Africa. Tears, celebrations, photos at the iconic sign. Take it in — you've achieved something extraordinary. Most spend 15-30 minutes at the summit (altitude limits time).

Descent to Barafu Camp (2-3 hours): Return via the ascent route. Descending is physically easier but requires concentration — loose scree, tired legs, and euphoria can cause stumbles. Reach Barafu around midday for hot drinks and food.

Barafu to Mweka Camp (3-4 hours): After 1-2 hours rest, pack up and descend further to Mweka Camp (3,080m). The lower altitude brings renewed energy and easier breathing. Arrive at Mweka Camp in late afternoon. Final night on the mountain — celebration with your team!

Summit Strategy: Stay warm, drink consistently (sips every 15 min), eat small snacks for energy, and trust your guides. Mental toughness matters more than fitness here.

Distance: 10 km
Hiking Time: 3–4 hours
Descent: 1,440m

Final Descent & Celebration

Wake up at comfortable altitude with easy breathing and renewed appetite. Today marks the end of your mountain journey — a bittersweet mix of accomplishment and nostalgia.

The Final Trek: After breakfast, begin the descent through lush montane rainforest. The trail is well-maintained but can be slippery from moisture, so use poles for stability. Watch for colobus monkeys, blue monkeys, and colorful birds celebrating your return to their domain.

As you descend, the air becomes noticeably thicker and richer with oxygen. The forest smells alive — damp earth, flowers, and vegetation. It's amazing to realize how far you've traveled vertically — from rainforest to glaciers and back.

The mood is jubilant. Climbers share stories, take final group photos, and exchange contact information. Guides and porters sing traditional Kilimanjaro songs. The mountain crew's energy and joy are infectious despite having just completed the same grueling journey while carrying your equipment.

Mweka Gate Ceremony: Arrive at Mweka Gate to official congratulations and certification. Sign the summit register — your name joins the thousands who've stood atop Africa. Receive your personalized summit certificate:

  • Green certificate for reaching Stella Point (5,756m)
  • Gold certificate for reaching Uhuru Peak (5,895m)

Crew Farewell & Tipping: This is where you say goodbye to your incredible mountain crew. Tips are customary and form a significant portion of their income. Your guide will provide envelope and suggested amounts based on group size and service quality. Many climbers find this an emotional moment — these individuals made your dream possible.

Return to Moshi: Vehicle transfer to Kibo View Farm Lodge (approximately 1 hour). First hot shower in a week! Laundry service available. Relax, nap, celebrate over cold drinks. Evening celebration dinner with the group — share photos, exchange social media, and process the incredible week you've just experienced.

Tipping Guideline: Typical range is $250-300 per client for the entire crew (distributed among guides, porters, cook). Your guide will provide detailed breakdown.

Transfer: Hotel to Airport
Meals: Breakfast
Flexibility: Based on flight time

Start training 2-3 months before your climb with cardio exercises (running, cycling, swimming) 3-4 times per week. Include hiking with a weighted backpack on weekends. Focus on building endurance rather than strength. We'll send you a detailed training guide after booking.

What about altitude sickness on Kilimanjaro?

The 8-day Lemosho Route minimizes altitude sickness risk through gradual ascent and acclimatization days. Our guides monitor your oxygen levels daily and are trained in altitude sickness management. We carry oxygen and first aid equipment. Walking slowly ("pole pole") and staying hydrated are key.

Can I charge my phone and camera on the mountain?

There are no charging facilities on the mountain. Bring spare batteries or a portable power bank (20,000mAh recommended). Keep electronics warm in your sleeping bag at night as cold temperatures drain batteries quickly. Solar chargers work but are less reliable due to variable weather.

How much should I tip the guides and porters?

Tipping is customary and important for your crew. Budget $250-300 USD per climber for the entire team (guide, assistant guide, cook, porters). We provide tipping guidelines with recommended amounts. Tips are pooled and distributed fairly among the crew at the end of your trek.

What happens if I can't reach the summit?

Your safety is our priority. If our guides determine you cannot continue safely due to altitude sickness or other health issues, they will escort you down. There are no refunds for not summiting, but you'll receive a certificate for the highest point reached. Our high success rate means most climbers reach Uhuru Peak.
