From arrival at Kilimanjaro Airport to your summit success and return — every detail of your Rongai Route journey mapped out
Upon landing at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), our friendly driver will be waiting for you with a Nyange Adventures welcome sign. Enjoy a scenic transfer to Kibo View Farm Lodge in Moshi, where you'll settle into your comfortable accommodation with stunning views of the mountain.
Today is entirely free — a chance to rest after your journey, shake off any jet lag, and soak in the atmosphere of this vibrant town at the foot of Africa's greatest peak.
Suggested Activities:
In the afternoon, meet fellow climbers and your lead guide informally over drinks. Your guide will conduct the pre-climb briefing covering the Rongai Route overview, gear check, acclimatization strategies, and safety protocols. Enjoy a farm-fresh dinner and an early night.
Tip: Use this day to buy any last-minute supplies — snacks, batteries, or walking poles — from Moshi's outdoor gear shops before heading to the mountain tomorrow.
After breakfast, the group departs Moshi for a 3-hour drive north to Rongai Gate (1,950m) near the Kenyan border — the starting point of the only route that approaches Kilimanjaro from the north. Complete registration formalities while porters organize and weigh equipment.
The Trek: Begin hiking through tranquil montane rainforest and farmland, quickly transitioning into open moorland. The northern slopes are drier and less trafficked than other routes, giving a more remote wilderness feel. Keep eyes open for colobus monkeys, buffalo, and diverse birdlife.
The pace is deliberately slow ("pole pole" in Swahili) to help everyone adjust to altitude. Your guides will teach proper breathing techniques and monitor the group's condition throughout the ascent.
Camp Arrival: Reach Simba Camp in the afternoon, named after the lions historically roaming this side of the mountain. Your crew will have tents set up, hot drinks ready, and dinner preparation underway. Evening briefing covers tomorrow's route, followed by a hearty meal and early rest.
Pro Tip: Stay hydrated! Aim for 3–4 liters of water daily to aid acclimatization.
After breakfast and camp breakdown, the trail leaves the last traces of forest and enters open moorland. The northern slope is wide and gradual, offering unobstructed views of the Kenyan plains stretching behind you and Kibo Peak rising dramatically ahead.
The Trek: The path climbs steadily through heather and tussock grassland. The vegetation thins as altitude increases — giant heathers give way to sparse scrub and open rocky terrain. The Rongai Route's gentle northern gradient makes this a steady, manageable climb despite the significant elevation gain.
Take regular breaks for water, snacks, and photos. Your guide will point out the unique northern flora and explain how this side of the mountain receives far less rainfall than the southern slopes, creating a distinct and dramatic landscape.
Third Cave Camp: Named after a series of natural lava caves nearby, this camp sits at a critical altitude for acclimatization. The panoramic views looking north toward Kenya are breathtaking — on clear days you can see all the way to the Amboseli plains. Enjoy hot drinks, dinner, and a thorough briefing for tomorrow's acclimatization day.
Today's ascent takes you deep into the alpine desert zone and up to School Hut — one of the highest camps on Kilimanjaro and the launch pad for your summit attempt on the Rongai Route.
The Trek: Leave Third Cave and continue climbing through increasingly barren terrain. Volcanic rock, loose gravel, and minimal vegetation define this harsh but beautiful landscape. The air grows noticeably thinner with every step. Kibo's summit crater looms ever closer, filling the southern skyline.
An optional acclimatization detour can be taken to visit Mawenzi Tarn — a dramatic glacial lake nestled beneath the jagged Mawenzi Peak. Even a short visit here, passing through the saddle between Kibo and Mawenzi, provides excellent altitude exposure.
School Hut (4,750m): Arrive at this high, exposed camp perched directly below the northeastern face of Kibo. Views are extraordinary in every direction — the vast saddle plateau spreads below, Mawenzi Peak rises to the east, and the summit ice fields gleam above. The camp is aptly named after a nearby rock shelter historically used as a mountain school.
Summit Preparation: Arrive by early afternoon for maximum rest. Guides conduct final gear checks, review summit night procedures, and ensure everyone is properly prepared. Early dinner around 5–6 PM, then rest until the midnight wake-up call.
Health Note: Mild headache, slight nausea, or fatigue are normal at this altitude. Report any symptoms to your guide immediately for monitoring.
Midnight Departure (23:00–24:00): Wake to hot tea and biscuits. Layer all warm clothing — temperatures can reach -20°C (-4°F) with windchill. Headlamps on, walking poles ready, the team begins the summit push under a brilliant canopy of African stars.
Ascent via Rongai Route to Gillman's Point (4,750m → 5,756m | 5–7 hours): The Rongai Route approaches the crater rim from the northeast, offering a slightly less steep but longer summit ascent than southern routes. The trail switchbacks up volcanic scree and loose gravel. Progress is excruciatingly slow — "pole pole" is not just advice, it's survival. One foot in front of the other, deep rhythmic breathing, short breaks every 30–45 minutes.
Around 5:30 AM the sky begins to lighten. Then — one of the most spectacular sights on Earth — sunrise from Gillman's Point on the crater rim, 5,756m above sea level. The glaciers ignite gold and pink. Below, clouds blanket Tanzania like a silver ocean. Tears, hugs, and the pure disbelief of achievement.
Gillman's Point to Uhuru Peak (5,756m → 5,895m | 60–90 min): The final push follows the crater rim clockwise past the Northern Ice Field. You are above the clouds, moving between ancient glaciers, lungs burning with every step. The air is impossibly thin — but the summit sign is now visible ahead.
UHURU PEAK — 5,895m (19,341 ft): The highest point in Africa. Tears, celebrations, and photos at the iconic sign. Take it all in — you've achieved something extraordinary. Most spend 15–30 minutes at the summit before the cold and altitude demand descent.
Descent to School Hut then Horombo Camp (3–4 hours): Return via the ascent route, then continue descending the saddle to Horombo Camp (3,720m) — the iconic A-frame huts camp. The lower altitude brings renewed energy, easier breathing, and ravenous appetite. Arrive in late afternoon for celebration with your team.
Summit Strategy: Stay warm, sip water every 15 minutes, eat small snacks for energy, and trust your guides completely. Mental strength matters more than fitness at this altitude.
Wake up at Horombo at comfortable altitude with easy breathing and a renewed, ravenous appetite. Today marks the end of your mountain journey — a bittersweet mix of deep accomplishment and nostalgia for the mountain you're leaving behind.
The Final Trek: After breakfast, begin the long descent via the Marangu Route through moorland and back into lush montane rainforest. The trail is well-maintained but can be slippery, so use poles for stability. Watch for colobus monkeys, blue monkeys, and colorful birds welcoming you back into their domain.
As you descend, the air becomes noticeably richer with oxygen. The forest smells alive — damp earth, flowers, and dense vegetation after days in the alpine desert. The mood is jubilant. Climbers share summit stories, take final group photos, and exchange contact information. Guides and porters sing traditional Kilimanjaro songs, their energy infectious despite the demanding week.
Marangu Gate Ceremony: Arrive at Marangu Gate (the Rongai Route descends via Marangu) for official congratulations and certification. Sign the summit register. Receive your personalized summit certificate:
Crew Farewell & Tipping: Say goodbye to your incredible mountain crew. Tips are customary and form a significant portion of their income. Your guide will provide envelopes and suggested amounts. Many climbers find this one of the most emotional moments — these individuals made your dream possible.
Return to Moshi: Vehicle transfer to Kibo View Farm Lodge (approximately 1 hour). First hot shower in a week! Relax, nap, and celebrate over cold drinks. Evening celebration dinner with the group — share photos, exchange social media, and process the extraordinary week you've just experienced.
Tipping Guideline: Typical range is $250–300 per client for the entire crew, distributed among guides, porters, and cook. Your guide will provide a detailed breakdown.
Your Kilimanjaro adventure concludes, but the memories will last a lifetime.
Morning Activities: Depending on your flight schedule, you may have free time to:
Airport Transfer: Our driver will collect you from Kibo View Farm Lodge with plenty of time before your flight. Transfer to Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) takes approximately 45 minutes depending on traffic.
Optional Extensions: Consider extending your Tanzania adventure:
Our team can arrange any additional experiences to complete your Tanzanian journey.
Final Thoughts: You came to Tanzania as a client, you leave as a friend — and as someone who has stood on the Roof of Africa. You've pushed your limits, discovered inner strength, made lifelong friendships, and achieved something truly extraordinary.
From all of us at Nyange Adventures: Asante sana (thank you very much) and tutaonana tena (we will see each other again)!
Don't Forget: Share your summit photos on social media and tag @nyangeadventures — we love seeing your achievements! Leave us a review to help future climbers.
Discover what makes the 7-day Rongai Route a unique and rewarding Kilimanjaro climbing experience
The Rongai Route is one of the most distinctive trails to climb Mount Kilimanjaro. This remote route starts on the northern side of Kilimanjaro, near the Kenyan border, and takes 7 days to reach the summit.
The Rongai Route is known as the most remote and unspoiled path up Mount Kilimanjaro because you walk through pristine wilderness on the drier, less-travelled northern slopes before reaching Uhuru Peak.
The 7-day Rongai Route gives climbers ample time to acclimatize to the high altitude, which means better chances of reaching the top of Africa's highest mountain while enjoying a quieter, more wilderness-like experience.
Join our upcoming group departure and experience the adventure of a lifetime with our expert mountain guides focused on your safety and success.
Not interested in the Rongai Route? You can also contact us for other Kilimanjaro routes such as Lemosho, Machame, and Marangu. We will help you find the best departure option for you.

While other routes struggle with mud and crowds, the Rongai Route remains open, beautiful, and surprisingly climbable — even when the rains come
Most Kilimanjaro routes sit on the southern and western slopes of the mountain — the side that bears the full force of Tanzania's long rains (March–May) and short rains (November). Trails turn to rivers. Camps become muddy. Visibility drops.
The Rongai Route is different. Approaching from the north, near the Kenyan border, it sits in a natural rain shadow. The same weather systems that drench the popular southern routes simply don't reach the northern slopes with the same intensity. The result? A drier, more manageable climb even during Tanzania's wet months.
The northern slopes receive significantly less rainfall than the south. Tanzania's prevailing weather systems move from the southeast — leaving the Rongai side sheltered and dramatically drier during peak rain months.
The rainy season keeps most trekkers away. On the Rongai Route, that means you'll have the mountain almost entirely to yourself — no queues at camp, no crowded paths, and a truly remote wilderness experience rarely found on Kilimanjaro.
Rainy season means off-peak pricing. You get the same expert guides, the same safety standards, and the same life-changing summit experience — at a more accessible price point. It's one of the best value windows to climb Kilimanjaro.
Rain transforms the lower slopes into vivid green landscapes teeming with wildlife and colour. The moorlands burst with wildflowers, waterfalls appear in the valleys, and the mountain takes on an atmospheric, mist-draped beauty you simply won't see in dry season.
Rainy season brings cooler temperatures and exceptionally clear air at altitude. Above the cloud layer, the summit views can be spectacular — with a carpet of clouds below and crystal-clear skies above, often rivalling the best dry-season days.
With group departures every week through March, April, and May, the rainy season offers some of the most flexible booking windows of the year. Ideal for climbers with limited holiday time who can't wait for peak season availability.
Serious trekkers know that the Rongai Route's northern position makes it Kilimanjaro's most dependable option year-round. Our rainy season departures run every week from March through May — with the same expert guides, the same safety standards, and an experience that's uniquely your own.

Everything you need to know about the 7-day Rongai Route
The Rongai Route is considered moderate difficulty. The 7-day itinerary provides good acclimatization time via the gentle northern slopes, making it suitable for anyone in good physical condition. No technical climbing skills are required, but you should be able to walk 5-7 hours per day with a daypack.
The 7-day Rongai Route has a strong summit success rate, thanks to its gradual northern ascent and well-paced itinerary. The route's gentle gradient and remote, less-trafficked terrain give your body excellent conditions to acclimatize compared to shorter or busier routes.
The price includes all park fees, camping equipment, professional guides and porters, three meals daily on the mountain, airport transfers, pre and post-climb hotel accommodation, safety equipment (oxygen, first aid), and summit certificate. International flights, visa, travel insurance, and tips are not included.
Yes, travel insurance with high-altitude trekking coverage (up to 6,000m) and emergency evacuation is mandatory. Make sure your policy covers helicopter rescue and medical expenses. We can recommend trusted insurance providers if needed.
The best months are January-March and June-October when weather is driest and clearest. The Rongai Route's northern exposure makes it one of the more reliable routes during the wetter April-May period too. Our group departures are scheduled during optimal climbing windows for the best experience.
Start training 2-3 months before your climb with cardio exercises (running, cycling, swimming) 3-4 times per week. Include hiking with a weighted backpack on weekends. Focus on building endurance rather than strength. We'll send you a detailed training guide after booking.
The 7-day Rongai Route minimizes altitude sickness risk through its gradual northern ascent and well-spaced camp elevations. Our guides monitor your oxygen levels daily and are trained in altitude sickness management. We carry oxygen and first aid equipment. Walking slowly ("pole pole") and staying hydrated are key.
There are no charging facilities on the mountain. Bring spare batteries or a portable power bank (20,000mAh recommended). Keep electronics warm in your sleeping bag at night as cold temperatures drain batteries quickly. Solar chargers work but are less reliable due to variable weather.
Tipping is customary and important for your crew. Budget $250-300 USD per climber for the entire team (guide, assistant guide, cook, porters). We provide tipping guidelines with recommended amounts. Tips are pooled and distributed fairly among the crew at the end of your trek.
Your safety is our priority. If our guides determine you cannot continue safely due to altitude sickness or other health issues, they will escort you down. There are no refunds for not summiting, but you'll receive a certificate for the highest point reached. Our high success rate means most climbers reach Uhuru Peak.
Our 7-day Kilimanjaro group departure includes overnight stays at our exclusive Kibo View Farm Lodge—both the night before your climb and after your descent. This isn't just accommodation; it's an integral part of your climbing success.
Before Your Climb: Arrive refreshed with a comfortable night's rest, organic farm-fresh meals, and a comprehensive pre-climb briefing in our peaceful farm setting—the perfect preparation for your mountain adventure.
After Your Summit: Celebrate your achievement with a well-deserved rest in comfortable accommodations, hot showers, and a celebratory dinner featuring the same organic ingredients that fueled your climb.
What makes our lodge unique is our 5-hectare organic farm that supplies all meals throughout your entire Kilimanjaro experience—from your first dinner at the lodge to every meal on the mountain, and your final celebratory feast. This farm-to-mountain approach ensures maximum freshness, nutrition, and food safety that supports your body's acclimatization and recovery.
Learn More About the Lodge Posted on Leticia LDecember 27, 2024Verified Excellent and exceptional experience! My experience couldn't be better and I couldn't recommend Nyange more! They are excellent and I'm super satisfied with everything.I booked my climbing to Kilimanjaro with them and everything was perfect from the starting communication to the very last second I was with them.I'm a woman solo traveler and I felt safe every single time. All the staff is very nice, helpful and attentive. They really make the phrase "come as a client, leave as a friend" come true, I'll miss everyone! Special thanks to my guide in Kilimanjaro: Amnaay (if you wanna go with him, I assure you'll have a fun and pleasant time! He knows a lot, is very encouraging and literally held me when I couldn't walk anymore. I don't know if I could reach the summit without him and all the other guys that came with me - the cooker, waiter and porters, everyone special, very professional and has their space in my heart). They arranged everything I needed: my commuting from the city center to the farm (their farm is amaaaaazing, beautiful and the room was super comfortable and clean and with a breathtaking view of Kilimanjaro. All the delicious food they make is local - with ingredients from the farm), even in my last night Amnaay asked them if they could cook Ugali for me, and they did!The owner, Praise, is also very caring and himself always make sure that everything is ok, always having nice conversations, asking if I need something, etc.I could be here writing a review of 50 pages only speaking good things about them. Highly recommend! It was for sure the best experience in my life and thanks for them!Posted on Jocelyn KDecember 10, 2024Verified Highly Recommend Nyange Adventures - a life changing experience I highly recommend Nyange Adventures. Amina coordinated our tour and was extremely helpful, communicative, and accommodating. We did a 9-day safari and 3-days in Zanzibar all coordinated through Nyange Adventures for our honeymoon. It was the perfect amount of time if you plan to do both Central Serengeti (most popular) and Northern Serengeti (Wildebeest migration in September), which we did. I wish we had more time in Zanzibar, and we could have easily spent 5-7 days there and scuba dived. Our safari was exceptional because our guide, Joseph, was top notch. Joseph is so kind and professional. He went out of his way to make sure we had an incredible experience. Joseph knew where to go, when to wake up, and he was just as excited to see the wildlife as we were, which made it even better. Our stays were mid-tier, and we always had a shower and bathroom. Some stays were better than others, admittedly, but the food was always delicious and the hospitality of the staff was incredible. Be prepared to spend a lot of time in the car and on bumpy, wild, and remote roads... remember that is what a safari entails. Be patient and let go of control. In order to access once-in-a-lifetime nature, you have to rough it a bit. We enjoyed learning more about the history of Tanzania (Tan-gan-ika) and Swahili culture. Do not skip the tribe immersions (we met the Hadzabe, Datoga, and Masai tribes). Pay your white people tax and spread USD tips around. Bring a lot of cash with you as we had trouble accessing ATMs. I wish we brought more cash, so we didn't have to waste time figuring out how to pay once we arrived. Amina warned me, but I didn't understand and if I went again, I would bring even more USD. Hadiya was our guide in Zanzibar. We did a walking tour with her. She was very informative, kind, and helpful. Skip the spice tour if you can... it is a big tourist trap. After a safari, you might want some time to decompress at these incredible beaches. Be prepared that the tides are strong and occur in the middle of the day. Amina booked a perfect hotel for us - the Sunshine Marine Lodge. In Zanzibar, it really matters where you stay! My only regret is not scuba diving. We ended our days on safari with a campfire and a dancing ceremony. I would highly recommend learning Swahili words and using Swahili language with locals. There is a lot to learn from the people who live in Tanzania - every person we met had a unique story and shared more about their way of life. Be patient. Embrace their culture and learn something. I really didn't want to leave and I can't wait to go back. I think about this experience every day.Posted on Courtney KNovember 16, 2024Verified Best team ever! I can honestly say that this was one of the best experiences I have ever had traveling. It was made special because of the amazing people who supported our trek up Kily- from our awesome guides, Amnaay and Musa, to Oscar, our chef, who prepared delicious meals to Steve, our waiter, who ensured all of our needs were met to Mohammed who ensured our tents and sleeping quarters were up to snuff and ever porter who supported our hike. Everyday I looked forward to seeing our team on the mountain, they always had smiles on their faces and were cheering us along the way. We became family as we shared time together and I learned to trust my team. Nyange Adventures is top notch and I highly recommend Nyange for your trek up Kily!Posted on Eduardo FOctober 17, 2024Verified Trip of a lifetime in the Ngorongoro crater with Rashidi Spent three days with Rashidi at the Ngorongoro crater and had the time of a life. Rashidi is an excellent guide. Not only can he spot the mammals, sometimes from kilometers away. But he can spot birds too. He can recognize the calls and finds them when they are hidden in thick bush. His English is great and he is knowledgeable about the land and people as well. We saw giraffes, lions, elephants, rhinos, serval cats, water buffalo, wildebeest, zebras, hippos, plus over 30 species of birds! Can’t recommend this company and Rashidi enough.Posted on Tom SOctober 14, 2024Verified Overnight guide tour to Ngorongoro Crater We had a very last minute opportunity with 3 extra days on a Tanzania mission trip and Nyange did a beautiful job arranging two nights at Ngorongoro Crater with a full day of birding and wildlife in the Crater. They welcomed us at Kilamanjaro International Airport and drove us to Dodoma and the end of the three days. Arrangements were great. Praise was very prompt with queries and helping get myself my wife and three friends all set up. Rashid was our guide and driver, took excellent care of us and demonstrated great guiding skills identifying birds large and small along with really good wildlife finds including 3 rhinos and a Serval Cat. I would highly recommend this group to anyone.Posted on Kumar TSeptember 4, 2024Verified Roof of Africa From the Safari to Kilimanjaro to ZanzibarEverything was arranged and sorted by these guysWhat a truly spellbinding experience into the heart of TanzaniaOne for the booksExtremely reliable company and staffPosted on Peter VAugust 26, 2024Verified Terriffic Tanzania We had the most amazing, interesting and memorable adventure in Tanzania. We had a 12-days adventure meeting tripes, local people in the villages, safari tours, waterfalls and farms. We had Francis Boniphase as our guide during the entire trip. He is very friendly and is curious to learn and give his knowledge to us. We also met the owner of the Nyange (Praise Nyange) who gave us some awesome experiences on his farm.Posted on MtEverestAugust 24, 2024Verified Made it with Nyange! My son and I just reached the summit on the 8 day Lemosho climb with the fabulous crew of Nyange. Special shout out to our guide Amnaay and the assistant guide Henry, without whom we would not have succeeded. On summit day, they carried our day packs, kept us at a steady pace (believe me, that is a good thing), when at several points I was ready to give up. We were one of the first ones to get there just in time to watch to most glorious sunrise. Then, they pretty much held on to us on the rapid and harrowing decent. I found Nyange hightly recommened in Stedman's book. It is a small local outfit that supports KPAP. The owner, who was once a porter, even came to say hi to us during our last day in Moshi. There are lots of operators, a couple of them had huge groups of trekkers, and I am sure they all do a fine job, but I chose to go with a local company and I am so glad I did. And, don't let anyone tell you Kilimanjaro is easy. It was very, very hard!
